15 dogs poisoned in Jhb

André Damons

Johannesburg - Dog owners in Princess Road, Claremont, found the bodies of 15 of their dogs on Tuesday morning.

All the pets were poisoned in the early hours of the morning, presumably by someone who broke into two cars in the street.

Chrissie Vermaak, 52, was the first to become aware of the killings and described the poisonings as barbaric and cruel.

When reporters visited the scene, the bodies of ten of the dogs lay on the pavement.

'Dogs are like your children'

Three Jack Russells and one German shepherd belonging to Charlene Willemse, 37, were also poisoned. "It is very sad and a big shock. Dogs are like your children," she said on Tuesday.

Leatetea Beyers, 27, said the dogs must have been poisoned after 03:00.

"I was outside at 03:00 and the dogs were still alive. It must have happened afterwards. We still saw how one of the dogs died (on Tuesday morning). It is not nice to see something like that."

She said they rushed the dog to the SPCA in Maraisburg, Roodepoort, but there were no veterinary surgeons available. On the way to another vet, the dog died.

Yvonne Stones from the SPCA in Roodepoort said the dog was turned away as their vet only arrived at 07:30. There was only one inspector at the clinic, but this person was apparently not allowed to work with medicine without the vet.

The dog owners arrived at the SPCA offices before 07:00.

"The security guards referred the people to an animal clinic about ten minutes away because they feared the dog would die if they had to wait for the vet," she said.

'I wondered why the dogs were so quiet'

Two cars in the road were broken into and radios were stolen during the night.

Alpheus Molele, who also lives on the road, chased after a man when he saw him walking with a radio, said his wife, Mariam Mokoke.

"At about 03:30, my husband heard footsteps outside and looked through the window and saw the man. He ran outside and chased after the man. I wondered why the dogs were so quiet," said Mokoke.

William Botha lived in the same street and suspected that the white powder that he found in his yard was what was used to poison the dogs. He was relieved that his two dogs slept inside the house, he said.

Police spokesperson Captain Frans Langeveldt couldn’t confirm the incident on Tuesday.

very sad indeed :(

Hang 'em high! I would honestly shoot someone without a second thought if they attempted to poison my animals!

15 dogs killed so these ****s could break into 2 cars. ****s.

(I was using the C word) :(

OMG....I love my doggies....can't imagine something so cruel happening to them :(

Nothing surprises me in this place anymore :(

That's absolutely disgusting. For the sake of breaking into 2 cars? Actually the number of cars is irrelevant. Their actions are atrocious regardless of what crime they were committing.

String'em up by their testicles play piñata with the motherfsckers...

This you're outraged about (and rightfully so) but not rats gnawing off a baby's toes.

The baby will live. And on the plus side, she'll be taken away from the god awful mother she has. But yes, this incident pissed me off more than the baby's toes being chewed off...

As for me: I don't have a baby, I do have a little doggie... Its all relative for everyone, I guess.
True but I didn't notice you cracking a joke about it.

*swears*

I would draw and quarter any f***** that was trying to poison my animals if I caught it, and I would make sure it is as painful and slow as possible for it.

bwana - I'd do the same if they had done this to one of my kids btw. I see a distinct difference...
