Cruise Control n00b questions

I don't think so. Although I only use in fifth or sixth gear when I'm travelling longer distances or open freeways.

Not used that much, but I wouldn't consider it pointless. I never used it in an automatic car though.
 
The Volvo shouldn't break automatically on the S40 - in act I'm 95% sure it won't. You probably haven't found a long or steep enough decline ;) As for going uphill, I actually cannot remember .... I think it disengages - but with the torque and momentum, it needs to be really steep.

Volvo cruise control also switches off if you swerve aggressively

Yeah CC is pretty sweet on the open road. All you do is steer. I use it on the N3 for those pesky average speed trapping stretches of road.
 
Also have a Kia (sportage) Gearing down will disengage CC. Also the car does not auto apply breaks on a downhill while in CC, so you go over the speed limit....

I was pretty sure that it did engage the brakes, but I'll check again to make sure.
 
I use mine a LOT. As soon as I hit the freeway with not so much traffic I engage it at 129km/h. Nice lazy drive and no surprise fines.
 
Merc C Class (auto) brakes itself... on long distances I sometimes brake by reducing the speed on the cruise control when approaching things like tollgates or an exit... .
 
Used mine for the first time. Worked nicely and average consumption went from 6.4 down to 6.3 after a minute or two. Was a very short drive, so might have dropped even further. I might use this more now.

Precisely what I used to do with mine.. just below the 130km/h mark.. and leave it there..... would brake on downhills so i wouldn't go over the number either...
 
Highly doubt any Manual car will still keep Cruise Control on if the speed drops by 30 or more. Most Manual cars I've driven is around the 20km/h mark.

Say you set it to 100, as soon as the speed goes less than 70. It will disengage, in a Manual. Auto's will obviously not loose that much speed as it will just down gear for you.

Why would the speed go 30kph less? I don't really understand. If you press the brake, cruise control must disengage - this is a safety requirement. If you lose speed on an uphill, just change to a lower gear.

If you don't change... Then it will disengage as it loses power...

Okay, I will take your word for it. That, however, has never happened to me (in approx 500 000kms). It might be because the vehicles I had with cruise control were 2.0 turbo diesels (manual) and there is always enough power to prevent a drop in speed.

Fixed.
If it didn't disengage you'd end up hitting the rev limiter between gear changes on a manual transmission.

Ummm ... it has to disengage?

Let's say you're cruising up a hill at 120km (3000 RPM).
What do you think would happen if you pushed the clutch in to down gear and the cruise control held the throttle position?
Hint: No longer a load on engine and the throttle is still being held open.
