Crysis 2 faced 'creative constraints'

Crysis 2 can be defined as a 'sandbox game with borders' - after developer Crytek faced down the limitations of Xbox 360 by ensuring it "avoided over-designing features."

The firm has explained why they chose a tighter, more metropolitan world for the second game as part of a huge exclusive in CVG sister mag Xbox World 360.

As previously reported, Crysis 2 is set in New York - a world away from its predecessor's lush, vast jungle terrain, which could only be seen on PC.

When asked if the decision to switch to Xbox 360 for the second game was limiting, Crytek executive producer Nathan Camarillo said:

"I wouldn't exactly call this generation of consoles 'limited'. However, the challenges have allowed us to avoid over-designing features, to keep the focus narrower and tight for a compelling experience on all platforms.

"In the end this will make for the best experience for the gamer, because we will spend more time per feature, making it polished, rather than spreading ourselves thinly just because we can. Creative constraints can be refreshing."

When asked if the confines of a city would restrict the freedom of players used to first game, he added:

"I think the freedom of Crysis 2 will surprise console gamers. Crysis is not about 'go anywhere'. It's about looking at a situation from a great vantage point and then formulating a plan that you proactively initiate to defeat your foes."

A salute to all console owners!

Another kickass title being dumbed down so it can work on consoles...

aaah nice having a high end pc and you get limited by a cheap ass console

Yep, we will just wait for the PC hacked version and download for free. That way we will ensure NO MORE! PC development of games titles. ;)

Thank the Xbox360 manufacturer. We are already used to dumbed down multiplats so it can be "streamlined" to at least work on the Xbox.

New York? rofl... the lush jungle setting is what sold this game. WTF is New York all about? Predator: concrete jungle failed because of this, I hope this does too. Why not make it like Spiderman/hulk/gta Prototype.

Hmmmmm,

Tough argument this one, PC gamers need the consoles as an industry catalyst but then games get dumbed down (No inventory in ME2!?!?!?!?!?!). We're also throttled by the inferior capabilities of consoles vs PCs, which sucks.

Hopefully developers will get creative and keep porting games with actual PC gamers in mind, I'm thinking about the latest Resident Evil pc port which actually rocked in terms of graphics and controls... Also the PhysX integration in games like Batman: Arkham Asylum and the Mass Effect games, not forgetting the DirectX 10 patch for Gears of War, those were pretty good! There's the bad side too though... The Force Unleashed PC port should've been punishable by death!

Here's hoping developers come to the party.

I hope there isn't a PS3 version, then they are really going to dumb it down, but its definitely PC version for me, this game is made for PC

It's very frustrating actually. Every time i see a game on the horizon that looks cool I scroll down till I see the dreaded words ported from/to console and I know it's going to be another stripped down version of what could have been a very cool concept.

In all fairness, not many of us couldn't play the first Crysis enjoyably on our PC's until a year or more after it came out. ;)

If it has to run on an Xbox, at least you know it will run on your 18-month-old graphics card, and you won't have to rush out and buy a new one for as much as a whole Xbox would cost...

Conclusive proof that consoles are evil.

The jungle in Farcry 1 was totally awesome & the second one would undoubtedly have looked even better. But no, the damn consoles perform best when dealing with low detail square things...like um New York buildings. Screw the console noobs, I want my damn jungle-setting.

Reminds me of *shiver* "Its not balanced for lean". This is starting to become a really k@k trend.

I don't really agree with that. I ran Crysis on a 7300GT at one time - albeit on the lowest settings, but the gameplay was just fine and it looked amazing to me at least. Every time i upgraded the experience got better, with practically no upper limit. That's the difference - consoles have to scale downwards, whereas PCs scale upwards. I don't care if I hit a performance wall with a 260. Actually I expect to do so.

@cerberus - yeah - I played it with an 8500gt, the crappiest POS ever, and it was indeed playable - even though it skipped a few FPS now and then...

You see what i'm saying - PC owners are just whiners. They complain because there are no games to stress their cards and then they complain when a game gets made that stresses cards for 3 years into the future because they can't max it out on their current generation hardware. PC gaming is all about scaling to whatever hardware you have. Consoles have a very rigid hardware specification.

Hmmm, it's funny how people always seem to think in terms of graphics only. If it were that only that gets dumbed down, I would not mind.
