Would be interesting to know how the CDN works, technically.
IE, if you request an uncached video, are you redirected to a CDN node that has it, or does your local CDN node retrieve it from somewhere?
And if the 2nd case, maybe the issue is an overloaded inter-CDN-node network?
This largely depends on the Service, Service Levels, Provider and Hosting Environment (Facilities). The CDN services breakdown:
- Web Application Acceleration
- Content Acceleration
- - Static
- - Dynamic
- Network Acceleration
The above is coupled to DNS, Load Balancing and Storage (appliance or application based)
You are always served to the closest physical node which depends on 1) Routing and Peering, 2) Internet Latencies 3) Node Capacity and Availability.
Note: There are CDNs hosted in third-party Facilities, these Facilities may implement their own rule sets (policy-based) under agreement, which may cause additional variables to 1) Routing and Peering, 2) Internet Latencies 3) Node Capacity and Availability. In my opinion degrading the expected service levels.
To answer your question, technically you will request the closest available cache. Pending on the agreement and/or node distribution and/or policies between parties, it can be cached locally (appliance or application based). Interesting topic when you want to discuss net neutrality.
