My usage has always been thus:
Gaming: 7PM to 12AM
NNTP / Other: 12AM to 6AM
Then it's the other guys turn. He only discovered torrents in the last 6 months or so. And the usage is from 6AM to 7PM. It's not always torrents. Generally it's email, youtube and other browsing. But torrents are a part of it (even though on most ISPs, the daytime performance is generally shocking). He understands that shaping is part of the deal, and he is happy with that, just so long as he gets something out of it.

The double edged sword that is unshaped is as follows: It's fantastic that it's open season on the Interwebz. Unfortunately, it also means that people who have always run the daytime downloads will be getting crazy speeds. Perhaps it's a good thing, the backlog of stuff will get cleared quicker. But at what cost?

I will look in to "at home shaping".

My PC is standing at home and has been setup and configured only to download NNTP/P2P content from 00:00 - 07:00 and normal steam updates are allowed anytime from 00:00-19:00 and its just doing its own thing. It will stay that way, im not going to remove these just because I'm on unshaped :)

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT advocating the download of the entire interwebz

I 'get' the sentiment here about not abusing the network, but with a good few users here voicing their issues with general downloads/speeds, a change of patterns was inevitable as the problems were ironed out.

Paul, Shaun and co are a smart bunch... at least we're led to believe lawyers require some semblance of intelligence (I stay just outside PMB bastid :p). As such I think the "allocations" we have been given are a reasonable reflection of what usage could be expected, taking into account the problems experienced by some users.

This was largely the reason for my asking the question of how these allocations were calculated. For a 10mb user, I would say I'm a pretty light user and was concerned I would be unfairly 'punished' for that. Whilst I could still easily surpass the allocation, chances are I won't get close, meaning I'm ultimately a happy camper as things stand.

What I would ask CW, is once the dust has settled and we hopefully remain in this unshaped paradise, what happens when there is a month or two of much-higher-than-normal usage?

They should punish the abusers :)

I like the idea of having a similar setup than some of the other ISPs where when you're abusing you getting shaped more. In this case what I would like to see is if you dont abuse the internet, you stay on a unshaped setup, but if you are a abuser, you get put back into the shaping setup. I dont know how much work it would be to get something like this setup, but its an idea, maybe its possible.

What do you classify as an abuser though?
I could stream all day and night and not consume 100gb but that does not mean I am not using massive amounts of bandwidth.

I'm using my internet the sameway I've always done it. My NNTP content is scheduled for 0-6, but the difference is, previously my max speed with NNTP was 300kb. Now it is > 900kb. That's 3 times faster thus 3 times more data.

Do what I've done to keep things within some form of "normal" I've throttled my NNTP speeds so that I don't go completely over the top... I still get more data down than i would have in a month but its still a reasonable figure, the backlog will clear and then the throttling can be removed and normal service will resume with just standard updates.

well it means getting you data 3 times faster - in actual fact the one change you might be able to make - and this is the sort of thinking we are wanting people to eventually be able to adopt - is to make the change of scheduling from 0-6 to 2-6 so, because you don't need the full 6 hours to obtain the content you want and in SA a fair number of people have 00:00-06:00 as their download window.
What we'd like to be able to do is to have customers who have a scheduler ready to run whenever there is capacity and for people to quite naturally fall into distinguishing between what they'd like to get now - content on demand - and what they'd like to get within the next day of so - - which is then scheduled

It isn't about users vs abusers - and as I've said somewhere we've pretty much banned the term - but rather about getting all users to be considerate about the ecosystem within which they find themselves. Some people have high data requirements, whilst others require more support.

We'd like people to not think about the cost per gigabyte of data - which appears in so many teaser adverts - but rather about the monthly cost for the service, we are a service provider and not a gigabyte vendor after all.

It's already difficult controlling myself not to press the resume button during the day, now you want me to set a speed limit :o

For now, whilst we work things out yes :)

I am working on getting all my systems synchronised via a scheduler as well atm, so that no downloads happen during the business day, and everything slowly ramps up until sometime around midnight when all hell breaks loose and then slows down for the sunrise period...

Well that's for CW too decide :) In my view someone who uses his line on max speed 80% of the day.

You can setup throttling for this period if you want too :)
