Hi im about to get 3mb ADSL broadband with 384kb/s download speed and i was wondering what my ping would look like playing cs 1.6, because i will get kicked from my favorite server once it goes higher than 120, the server is hosted in Germany and i'm in Ireland, so I would like to find out before i sign the contract.

plz help!

Hi

ohh i didnt know that bt still even thou it is a different country, would you know anything about it? i know the upload speed is slower but how much slower? and would you be able to play with 3Mb Adsl in your country?

CS 1.6 uses on average 4 - 8 kb/s, of which you have a max download speed of 384 kb/s. As you can see, a faster internet connection doesn't make a significant difference unless you're going from 56k or ISDN to ADSL, however your latency might improve slightly.

I obviously can't tell you what the latency would be from your connection in Ireland to the gaming server in Germany. What you can do is do a tracert or ping from your current connection to this gaming server and paste the results here.

i ussually play in the net cafe they have 2mb DSL connection and the ping is around 70, but i wouldnt know for sure till the weekend, thx for replying

Seems we have quite the Google presence to be considered leading ADSL authorities. I suppose in no other country in the world has there been a community so interested in finding the dirty facts than SA.

we do sometimes get international's popping up on the forum, and most aren't aware that this is a South African forum :)

If you're getting a 70 ping on a 2mbit connection, then you'll obviously get an equal or slightly better ping on a 3mbit connection, although their shouldn't be a significant difference in latency between these connections.

I suppose its better getting DSL connection but its not availabe in my area :(, beggers cant be choosers

Well this forum is very handy and the ppl are friendly, and seem to know a lot about broadband, it is worth leaving the comment here rather than paying for it :),

I thought the ping will go up once the upload speed decreases, so i wanted to know by how much

ping is linked to the speed your pc can send out data

so if you uploading or download at full speed your ping will be kuk

dont download and game at the same time unless you have bandwidth limiter

thought it might be worth adding that latency is the measure of how long it takes data to leave one point and reach the other, which is mostly dependant on the distance which the data has to travel, the quality of the line and network and then finally but least important, your download and upload rates.

I also would like to play Starcraft( if possible with South Korea) on battle net and quake3 will that be ok?

man i play any game any where on a 364K connection just make sure all messaging and other Downloading software is closed.

You will get better pings if you have a high upload speed.

Starcraft, in Korea? Doubt it, but then again, its a RTS not an FPS, so just maybe

You will get better pings if you have a high upload speed.
 Why would that be?

high upload = many bits can travel to the destination in short succession
ping = how fast a single bit/ping can get to the destination.

As I understand it, the only time when a high upload/download rating, say 3mbps, will make a difference if you're maxing out the connection like killadoob said. This is not the case with games.

Starcraft will work. Quake might be a problem. A 150ms delay in starcraft is playable while a 150ms delay in Quake/CS16 will get you killed. Often.

What does it depend on?
Distance to server
Type of connection (Wireless vs ADSL vs Satellite etc)
ISP (to a lesser extent)
Shaping policy of ISP
Connections between the countries

Havoc is right. Those 5 things together will decide your ping. If you use the same service provider and account type (probably unshaped) as that Internet Cafe then you should get roughly the same (70ms) ping.

Ask the people at the Cafe what ISp they're with and what account they have.

Yeah i will try all the following, thx every1 for replying you's have been very helpfull, appriciate it :)

P/s with sufficient help pigs fly just fine
