Hi guys.

So I am an avid CS:GO player. Been playing since 1.6 was launched and probably will for quite some time still.

One question I have, and it is something I have Googled extensively

I will be merrily running around, getting myself shot to s**t, enjoying a very reasonable, I think, ping of 27-35ms.

When suddenly the #$%@#&*!! ping will shoot up to like 1500ms, hover there for like 10 seconds and the come down again.
This happens almost every time I am playing, sometimes once every hour or so, sometimes every ten minutes, sometimes only once. And ALWAYS inevitably when I actually have a chance of winning a firefight.

All the things mentioned in forums etc. I have come across I have done. From the obvious like stopping downloads to less obvious like disabling the sound drivers on my GPU, seeing as I am using the mobo audio.

Anyone have the same issue, and any ideas as to what might cause this or how to stop it?

What ISP are you with?

When playing, have a few terminal windows open and ping your gateway, 8.8.8.8 and the server and play in widowed mode to monitor the terminals.

This will help you identify if it's the server, your Internet, or you.

Thanks.
I am with the best and most reliable ISP of course, Telkom..... Although I must admit I am considering moving to Crystalweb.
Will try your advice.

Every time your ping spikes, you die right? It's a hack.

Haha. Thought so.

Biggest issue for me is I am not, nor ever will be a great player. I really enjoy the game, and honestly play for enjoyment. To give you an idea, I think I am on like level 5 or something.
And between work, a six year old and all the other cr@p life sees fit to pass your way, I only have so much time to play. And to waste half of that due to this kind of thing is FUBAR.

It could be the exchange.

Try another ISP to be sure. Many offer 1Gig trials.

I wouldn't consider it a line issue at all from what you've described. It sounds like there could be some disk activity on your PC that causes the lag/spike to happen. Especially during a firefight where it gets intense (not only for yourself, but for your PC processing all the goodies too)

I'd try and keep Performance Monitor open and check Disk IO/RAM usage and CPU, so when a spike happens, alt-tab and see what's what. You can even see the network so if it's an offending program (like Java) you can kill it and go on with your life.

Whenever this happens to me, its 99% of the time my Disk. I need an upgrade :eish:

net_graph 1 and monitor it. should tell you what's breaking

A bit off topic, but what servers are people playing on at the moment? A few months ago the intoxicated servers were pretty full, now my CS doesn't pick up any local casual servers with players on at any time of the day??

Queue for comps?

Why play casual?

I have the same thing to my minecraft server hosted in the UK, doesn't bother me too much so never really looked into it.

Servers need to be manually updated after they're released so for a few hours they're down and everyone plays Valve casual.

They're up now.

Comps take time, which I don't have when I'm working. Casual I can just jump into for a few minutes when I have free time?

You can queue for casuals too.

Start a lobby, select casual and the maps you want to play. Wait a minute or 2 and bam. This has been implemented with the new level 3 requirement for comps. And they are pretty busy. Limited to 10 players per side though. I don't even use the community browser no more. And probably the reason they are so quiet/dead?

whooo why didn't I know this. I've only ever played on the community browser :(.

Thanks :D

Intoxicated are shutting down their servers soon just fyi.

As slvr said, net_graph 1 will explain loads to you.

I would stay away from Crystalweb personally as I had bad experience with them regarding in game latency.

My ping on Mweb is 16-30, then I have loss like 30-80%... rubberbanding is like next level.
