CS:GO receives 14,000 negative Steam reviews in a single day after going free to play
Players are unhappy about changes to Prime status, and having spent money on a game that is now free to all.
CS:GO abruptly went free to play and added a battle royale mode called Danger Zone on Thursday. The immediate reaction hasn't been great: 14,327 negative Steam reviews flooded the CS:GO store page on December 7 alone. That's more negative reviews for CS:GO in a single day than in any entire month since Steam added a user review system back in 2013. Another 4,000+ negative reviews have appeared so far today.
Most of the new negative reviews point to the free to play model rather than the new battle royale mode. Some players are unhappy that a game they spent money on is now free for anyone who wants to play (even, in some cases, players who have owned the game for years and have played for thousands of hours). Others were hoping for more of a reward than the loyalty badge they received for having purchased the game prior to Thursday—some reviewers feel they are entitled to an exclusive skin or weapon. Many are convinced that going free to play will result in a sudden influx of cheaters and hackers. There are a number demanding a refund for the purchase price.
Many negative reviews also take issue with the change to Prime matchmaking. Previously, Prime matchmaking was limited to players who added a legitimate phone number to their accounts and had played enough to attain Rank 21. Now, anyone who had purchased CS:GO prior to the switch to a free to play model has been elevated to Prime.
CS:GO player count highest in almost two years thanks to Battle Royale and free-to-play
The concurrent player count for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has reached its highest peak since January 2017, following the addition of the new battle royale mode 'Danger Zone' - and going free-to-play.
Launched on December 6, Danger Zone is CS:GO's answer to Fortnite, PUBG and Blackout, as it attempts to steal back players who have migrated to the new battle royale phenomenon.
It still has all the signature aspects of Counter-Strike's gunplay and mechanics, but in a new innovative setting, and this combined with the move to become a free-to-play game has helped the player count soar.
The same day as it was released, CS:GO also shot up the rankings on Twitch for concurrent viewers too, which likely also attracted a new audience of potential players.
CS:GO's all time concurrent player count peak sits at 850,485, set in April of 2016, and it has only crossed the 800,000 mark once since, in January 2017.
Since then, the player count remained steady before seeing a slight decline through 2018, with most months seeing a peak of only 400,000-500,000, but on December 8, the player count shot up to 747, 896.
Traditionally, January is CS:GO's strongest month for player counts, meaning with such a strong start to December, there is hopes that a new peak record could be set.
I should be on...Anyone up for Danger Zone tonight?
I should be on...
Are you only going to play Blackout or MP too?Awesome, I will be on from around 18:00. Still need to download COD, thinking of getting it from ZoHaN on Monday.

Just an update on my long 30min+ queue times, and never getting in(if others having issue too)... I did query support re 'are non prime qs working properly, maybe a bug or something'... responded with basically... q's work on trust factors, ranks etc etc etc, so, what they saying is basically, picking it up f2p, being first time playing trying to get in to br solo with no ranking on account or anything vs 30k other people also q'ing, yeah, good luck with that, I'm bottom of the barrel, well below even the haxors. So, to play solo br, need to play 'normal' game first for a while to get 'trust factor' up etc, or q with others(like Urban which I will take up hopefully this week sometime)
