Howzit guys/girls

Been doing some research, and being in the IT profession myself, I was wondering if some of you that are located in the CBD area would mind doing a little comparison to showcase true throughput speeds using say Speedtest.net or something similar.

I signed up for the Telkom "free' 3month program, and wish to upgrade my line to either a 4mb/10mb, but it would seem that the 10mb uncapped solution at this stage is not quite feasible. I prefer speed above bandwidth so may chose to go with an ISP that can guarantee me higher speeds.

I am pretty sure 10mb/s is supported where I live, as some friends who live close by and operate off the same exchange using Telkom as an ISP have informed me.

Should I sacrifice bandwidth for the speed, and if so - are the newly showcased DoBroadband(UNCAPPED) products the way to go?!

Thanks

In my opinion 1Mbps uncapped is more than enough, unless you're downloading 1080p videos 24/7.

If you're referring to latency as 'speed', then you should note that the latency between the 384kbps & 10Mbps accounts should be exactly the same, unless they are shaped/throttled differently.
10Mbps uncapped usually costs a fortune.

Before you consider upgrading to 4 or 10Mbps ADSL, you should check your ADSL statistics page on your router's web interface. If your downstream line attenuation is above 45dB, then your odds of getting a stable 4Mbps or faster ADSL connection would be slim to none.

Latency does improve from 384k to 10mbit, not as much as you would think, but latency to the 1st hop usually is about 18-20ms on 384k and 6-7ms on 4mbit and 4-5ms on 10mbit. As you can see, its tiny but does improve.

1mbit is what I would call the minimum for Broadband, and 4mbit is nice, though I don't think you need more than 4mbit, once you experience 10mbit you will fall in love, as geeky or nerdy as that may sound.
