Telkom will just twiddle a knob on the DSLAM to lower the speeds slightly. It will perform like the 384 and 512 variants ... just a bit slower.
 
I would get the 192k ADSL.. if it was R199..

Funny though, that the 192 isn't half the price of the 384??
 
Let me start with : I HATE TELKOM : to avoid ppl from over flaming me....

But, in practise, you can not always just half everything due to fixed costs.

But I would have guessed that Telkom should have dropped it to something to R250. That would have made sense.

The fact that we have paid for the infrastructure over and over, then Telkom should have dropped it to something closer like R0 since we are paying ISP's...

Guess I'm just pre-empting Telkom's defence for not halfing the price. But MaD, I'm still with you, price of R199 would have seen me queing for the service.

You're right Razor0, there are a hell of a lot of people out there that don't know how expensive telecomms are in SA. I guess it's mainly 'cause they've never had any choice in the matter of who to get their services from. The media do seem to have caught on to it so the word should spread, very slowly, but it should spread...
 
Yip, there are alot of un-educated people in the country we call South Africa and that has lead to Telscum getting away with these high prices, partly.

What exactly is CUASA? And does have more clout than ICASA?
 
I think anyone who actually uses Telkom knows just how expensive it is. Of course they have no point of reference as to prices abroad, but 99% of people who use Telkom will know that Telkom is expensive even without those reference points.

I don't use Telkom for connectivity and plan to keep it that way (and encourage others as much as possible) until ADSL becomes affordable. As I see it, the current 3GB 512k option, which works out to R1010, is about 300% overpriced.. so when it comes down to under R380 Telkom can expect an application form from me.. and no doubt tens of thousands others who can then afford it.

MaD, for interests sake, what do you use? We don't exactly have a lot of options at the moment.

(Btw, I use dialup and pre-paid Vodacom GPRS cos the rest are too expensive, but I'm considering one of the cheaper* ADSLs)

* Not cheap, just cheaper than the really expensive ones
 
I use.... well i cant say really.. its wireless but its not Sentech or iBurst.. a *lot* of people around CT use it.. and theres no cap.. not that that matters cos I dont do more than 5GB/mo anyway.

Oh.. did I mention Blouberg/Tableview/West Beach has more than 35 access points?.......... lots of wireless things happening in the area, a mate came round with a lappie, antenna and sum s/w and we scanned for about 10 mins. Good area to sell wireless equipment in hehehe. There are also 2 WISP's in the area, namely Uninet [www.wdsl.co.za] and Wireless-Online [www.wo.co.za]... :)

Check out nodedb, last time i checked there were quite a few willing fellows sharing connections..
 
As far as I can see,the competition mechanism is starting to kick in.

DSL 192 will be a big headache for Sentech,WBS,SNO ,they will respond to this "threat" to their respective maket share.

This is just the begining ....

I wouldn't mind getting a phat satellite connection here and sharing it with everyone in the area as a not-for-profit initiative.

Anyone bold enough to pitch up here and try to confiscate the hardware will leave via the balcony.

Does anyone here share their connections?
