Windows sh*ts the bed with the downloads from Cudy so here are the two main files.
* Use Ethernet cable
** Don't blame me if you c*ck it up
1. Use within the OEM firmware as an intermediary upgrade - default 192.168.10.1
openwrt-mediatek-filogic-cudy_wr3000-v1-sysupgrade.bin
2. Once the above has been done use the next one as the proper openwrt version - default 192.168.1.1
openwrt-23.05.3-mediatek-filogic-cudy_wr3000-v1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

* The Wireless interfaces are off by default and need to be enabled.

Worth it to upgrade to openwrt please?
Yes. I set it up on a raspberry pi and the experience was quite good. If the pi wasn't so poor processor wise I would have used it as a router.

I am looking into getting a compatible router to play with it in a better environment

How is openwrt in mesh mode? I've had 2 x w3000s that have been rock solid for I would guess 9months or so, but I'm finding I need to restart them more and more these days.

Yes, if you have one an old x86 box is great as a router for Internet access.
I got openwrtx86 to start on a pc. Tried different network cards., cannot get an ip address to login to web interface. Even assigning 192.168.1.1 manually on other computer does not work..

Dependent on the whether you using wire or wireless.
The Cudy software its automatic while with openwrt it's a bit more work.

Did you install two NICs? Can you see them on the cli via IP a?
No. Currently 3 lan ports.
Onboard and two in pci slots.
Onboard light does not come on when connected with cable. I assume it's not recognised.

Yeah, I've got wired backhaul and don't mind playing with settings,

Hmmm.... found this :
"With wired backhaul you don't need mesh or WDS. You just set them up as dumb APs and the client devices should be (somewhat) smart enough to roam between them as needed"

You concur?

I'm all for the firmware, but man those Cudy boxes feel a little lighter than the plastic shell. Would love to see how they're actually made. They feel seriously crappy. Very little shielding that I can see. Not sure about the AX3000.

The openwrt page has some photos showing the inside of the WR3000
