I know someone very well who stutters, not bad, but enough to notice. It sometimes gets worse, then better, and so on. He started when he was about 7 years old, and he's 30 now.

Was wondering, is there a cure for this? Like a 100%?

There is a lot of speech therapists, but I never heard of anyone who really got better of that. Or am I wrong?

Of course there is a 100% effective way to resolve a stutter - become a mute. :p

Seriously though, I know of someone who's stutter was cured by a psychologist who specialised in linguistics. Not sure of the doc's name at all though...

I've been stuttering (was very bad at first, now it's better though) for 12 years now... been through several therapists, etc... still not gone :)

As a stutterer, my friend was taught to "sing" through the words. I must admit that it sounded awfull at first, but throughout the years he mastered the art of "singing".
He developed an "accent" that sounds distinctively "British" :)

My sister stuttered severely from birth, she attended speech therapy her whole school career (grade 1 to 12), she worked very hard at overcoming her speech handicap.

By the time she was 1st year university she had stopped stuttering and speaks fluently.

I once asked her about it, she said, that to this day before she opens her mouth to speak, she mindspeaks the sentence first.

I know which words i`m going to have trouble with with when i start a sentence, so i try to use the most appropriate synonyms, if there is none I switch between english and afrikaans words.
Put "ummm" before the word.

After reading the posts so far, I must confess. The "friend" I'm referring to is actually me. (Luckily I'm still my own "friend":D) It's an issue that sometimes shadow everything, except at home. At work it's okay, but still sometimes you get that moron who makes an issue of it, and in the overall business world, it's bad for me. I'm afrikaans, so when I start my bad english, oh boy you must hear that.:D Just the other day I phoned incredible corruption in Boksburg, and the lady who answered the phone, laughed at me. Man, that was not so lekker. But still I can talk, I could have been a mute.

Thats why I never tried that. Still can't see how it can help me. It's not like I'm "afraid" of everybody, I just cant speak fluent.

Was just thinking of that the other day. Why dont we stutter while singing? Maybe because we know we'll ***-up the whole song?:D

i have a slight stutter that only surfaces when i'm nervous or speaking to fast
Same with me too, nervousness is a bastard.

It helped her, but it still took 13 years? Problem with that, I've tried to "learn" what I must say in a certain situation, but if just one thing falls out of place, like someone interrupts you or something like that, then all of it helps null.

I've read up a bit on that a while ago. That thing costs like R12500! And what they said then, is for some it might not work, or it helps at first, but after some time it all gets worse again.

That works, but sometimes there isn't a replacement, like names, or when you read.

That also works, but I've tried sofar not to use things like that. I know a few people who did do that, and oh boy it doesn't sound good if that end up using "ummm" or alike before everything, and thats usually what happens.

That is so NOT cool.

I had an Afrikaans guy phone me the other day with a really severe stutter. He could have just sent me an email but there he was battling with every second word and I just thought it showed awesome persistence and dedication plus the additional difficulty he was having with English took loads of courage.

I find it sexy actually.

Reminds me of Gareth from British Pop Idol. I wanted to jump his bones whenever he started stuttering.

Just wait until it's you behind the wheel and there's no way out except through the flames :)

I wasn't meaning any disrespect. Just saying it can be a turn-on for some people.

While it's an obstacle in the person's life, other people don't see it or notice it as much as the person thinks.

Believe me, most people notice it... your friends and family get used to it and help you along... others make fun of you because you can't speak like they do.... it's definitely not a turn-on, not even close.

I used to have a bad stutter when I was younger, around 10 or so. I must say say it usually happened when I was nervous or anxious. Had a problem saying words that began with W, I just grew out of it I guess.

Understood! The people who make fun of people with speech impediments are retards and people shouldn't pay any attention to them. I realise though it's easier said than done.

I have somewhat of a panic disorder whereby i have panic attacks in public and generally look like a complete psycho. So while mine isn't a problem with speaking i can understand where you are coming from. We all have our hurdles and i am sorry for my earlier post. I didn't really give much thought to the situation.
