Curious : Dedicated AP more powerful than wireless router?

Is a dedicated AP stronger, more powerful and better for wireless than having a combo (router, wifi, gateway, modem) in a single box?

I know in many other products multiple boxes are better than 1 multibox. Is it true for this?

Not from a management point of view. Could be better for traffic handling and bypassing AP limitations. For instance you might want your LAN to be 1gbps capable when most wifi APs don't go that far with their routing hardware inside.
