A lot of things affect the value. Where did you study? What were your marks? Have you done an internship? Do you have industry experience?

I am a remote javascript developer for a company in the US. As a junior I was making R285k a year with a light project load and plenty of opportunity to learn. Entered the position with a 2 year degree. After three years I am up to R970k. Salaries in South Africa are abysmal and if I ever lost this job it's going to really suck going to the pay available here.

Really? I don't know why I have always been under the impression that they were poor for developers compared to overseas positions.

They're good if you're in JHB or CT. Durban, very few companies pay on par. Luckily, I am at a company that is ok compared to the other crap in DBN.
