My Vodacome 200s contract has expired. I have a Nokia E71 and am very happy with it. I do quite a bit of typing and find the QWERTY keyboard very suitable. I am considering not upgrading at all, thus reducing my contract cost. Otherwise, go to E72 which is basically staying with the known. Am interested in the Nokia N8. Have never used a touch screen before. Those of you who have used QWERTY as in E series or Blackbery - how does typing on a touch screen compare? Thanks for your input

Depends on your needs;the N8 is a multimedia monster;the capacitive screen is very good.Only potential issue you might have at the moment is the lack of a Qwerty Portrait keyboard;a software update will fix this up in a few months time. The N8 is a really impressive piece of kit.

My HTC Desire has me converted from a full slide-out QWERTY to touch screen only - I don't see myself ever going back. With a couple of hours/days to adjust, and if the screen and virtual keyboard combo is decent (which pretty much all the current crop of touch screen phones are), don't let that put you off at all. I can probably type faster on my Desire by now than I ever could on my Touch Pro, and I still can't use the wife's BB9700 with its daft little buttons.

I would recommend the iphone 4 if your going to buy a touch screen phone and want a good on-screen QWERTY keyboard.
The QWERTY on the iPhone 4 works very well and the iPhone screen will kick the Nokia N8 screen ass!

I am on the other end of the spectrum. I hate the iPhone with its touch screen only. Could not adjust to it. My BB9700 is perfect for me. My wife has the E72 and the major irritation to me is the ridge around the touch pad. Makes it very difficult to navigate using the touch pad. Other than that it's a nice phone. She opted for the E72 over the N8 because, like me, she doesn't like touch screen.

Don't forget that Swype takes away the hassle of having to type on touch screens if the phone is compatable with it.
Don't think I ever want to text/email, etc without Swype again in my life!

I R a dutchie, though... so for 80% of my texts it doesn't help much. :(

I would go with touch screen personally. You just need to take a little time to get used to it then it's actually faster and more pleasant to use than a hardware keyboard on a phone.

Thank you everyone for your responses so far. Odd that the N8 does not have portrait orientation QWERTY at the moment. Swype looks like an interesting aid to typing on a touch screen, although on the Ovi store site, the N8 is not listed as a compatible phone for the app. When I Googled Swype I found reference to an Afrikaans language pack.

Not such a big problem. It does take some time for the phone to learn the dutchie words but after a while it's like swype was designed for afrikaans users as well.

Can vouch for that, Swype has now learned many slang and Afrikaans words from me :D
Moer, kuk (with the "a" of course), Strandfontein, etc...

E71 to N8

I have changed from an E71 to a N8 about 2 months ago. The conversion from E71 to E72 is just more of the same. The N8 is in a different league. It does have a full portrait keyboard despite some previous comments. Just turn it a around. The Camera is in a league of it's own compared to other phones.

Points that the n8 has over the E71:
GPS lock is far quicker (might have been my firmware version on the E71)
Touch Screen is better than the nokia 5800 and software has been improved
Camera is now usable
Ovi Music and audio playback seems to be better.
Ovi Maps 3.06 is a great improvement to 3.02 on the E71
Connectivity (same hardware specs) is handled better between WiFi and 3G and Edge

E71 advantages
Battery Life - the days of 5 days standby time are over - N8 will generally last a day and a half
Office Editor - N8 has viewer software only unless you pay for the upgrade.

I am impressed with the N8, especially after dropping it on a rock and it has survived the fall with a notch on the screen. A worthy successor to the E71.

Thanks again for all your comments. I decided to go for the N8, and am pleased I did. As per all reports, the camera is great. I am a homeopath and take before and after photos of skin conditions etc, so the N8 is perfect for that purpose. The native QWERTY keyboard is very one dimensional compared to the E71 regarding easy access to numbers, punctuation marks etc. But I have downloaded Swype (thanks for the heads up Shake&Bake) which I found on Ovi Store, and it is a great keyboard even just for finger typing, never mind swiping. I have also downloaded Opera Mini 5.1 beta which is much better than Nokia's internet browser. On my E71 I could download the Quickoffice upgrade for free and paid for the Adobe upgrade. Will now pay for both, because I use them quite a lot. And free music downloads for 6 months - what an opportunity to upgrade my music collection!
