Curry or bunnychow in Centrurion/Midrand

Had a hot chicken curry at Menlyn shopping centre's food court. Curry was very nice. Very pricey but was very tasty. A bit too much mashala as the curry was super super red but tasted good. Their rotti was a joke though it was rock hard... R95 for what looked like a small curry with 2 plain rottis was too much but I think it's rent at menlyn that is pushing the price up.

You might think it is crazy but here is a quick and easy phutu recipe in the microwave.

1 cup mielliemeal
1 cup water

Mix in a microwave safe bowl with lid. Clover and cook on full power as follows:

Cook for 1 minute then rest for 3 minutes, stir (repeat 3 times)
Cook for 3 minutes then rest for 1 minute, stir (repeat 3 times)

Easy as that! Enjoy!
Tried this over the weekend, came out very nice..

Works very well but with everything microwave it tends to get hard when you let it stand so for immediate consumption.

The pot method works nice because whatever is left over can be reheated and eaten with milk, sugar and butter for another amazing meal or breakfast next day.

Please do yourself a favor and look a place that advetises as Durban style curry.

Don't waste your money elsewhere.

Coming from a charou that recently relocated to Randburg.

Don't know where in Randburg you are but check this place out if you get a chance - https://www.facebook.com/Chilliexpressweltevredenpark/

Eaten from there twice and the food was proper. No hot, medium, mild selection - I think flavour selections are the downfall of small curry places. Trying to adapt recipes and maintain different curries for different people...rather just make it the way your family always made it. The food is spicy and warm - not too hot by my Durban Indian palate. Will warm up your scalp though.

I think Mistress of Spice is in the same centre - food is decent (definitely not as good as Chilli Express) but pricey.

In Randburg there is Lugz and Currylicious you should also try, in Roodepoort it's Chilli Express or the Curry Place in Eagles Landing shopping center.

I'm getting flashbacks to mornings as a kid on my Uncle's farm. Gogo would make us all phutu before we would go out and play on the farm. That and the copious amounts of raw sugarcane and lychees we'd eat during the day, would keep us running until dinnertime.

I can still taste it with fresh milk, butter and brown sugar. Just the smell alone would make me think of the farm.

wit ous chow places all those....raisins in the rice andol!
cyber curries YUK!! best stew/spew...maybe ...

there is a colored aunty there in the spar centre on harry gulaun... not sure what its called, but its on the corner of the complex.
better than most places i've eaten.. and i'm from kzn!

you on your own looking for phutu...
i get my helper to make me some... or just settle for the pap from kfc..

This is so funny coz the "aunty" is a wit aunty :D (i think she is greek) - you are refering to Heavens Kitchen. Food is divine.
This is a KZN boy looking for KZN food - House of Curries in Midrand https://www.google.com/maps/place/House+Of+Curries/@-26.0025932,28.1249543,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x1e956e092bdb0ca1:0xae15bc3c6431f57e!8m2!3d-26.002598!4d28.127143
The only issue with House of Curries is that after the lunch time rush, you need to call Marlon to see what he has left.
And since you like proper KZN food, you will be pleased to know that he has Tin fish samoosas and on a Saturday there is Trotters, fish roe chutney and cornish in gadra

Heavens kitchen in Midrand is not bad at all. Durban aunty cooking there so the curry is proper.

You are right about house or curries. They there across the highway right? I know the cook there and she is tops as well!

Ya that Greek porra coloured Mediterranean mix tannie in heavens kitchen same one!

I think hoc takes it... By barely a pickle heheh

come on shirley

there is no purer form of charou than one who's bloodline runs thick in chatsworth
just as there is no bigger boneheads than the ones from brackpan / benoni / parow

Are you sure you not talking about the Phoenix charous?

Closely related to the Chatsworth charous but in a league of their own.

Hey those Durban 'North' charous are nowhere closely related.

Well any one from the North is in a different league.
