Good day,

I would like to find out the import duties, if I sent an auto part out for repairs to Canada? The beneficiary advised me to label it at $15 as second hand automotive part.

Will I pay any fees when the repaired item is returned? VAT? The item is purely for personal use.

Thank you.

What is it, what's wrong with it and why does it have to go to Canada?

Unless things have changed you can register the goods prior to sending them to Canada, then there are no duties on return.

Speak to your shipping agent.

I've ordered brand new motorcycle parts (shock absorber, oil filter, etc) from the UK and the only taxes payable on import was VAT. As far as I know motor parts are duty free whether new or second hand.

I know Jeep parts are imported from Canada (if the dealers nationwide dont have stock they special order) but god knows why you would send it there...

Its basically an ETM for Volvo, which comes with manufacturing fault from start and there was a major recall in North America due to the issue, but obviously Volvo SA doesnt know anything about any recalls, so I was reading on Volvo forums and found a company that modifies the part with lifetime warranty. Now I need to get the part there, they are in Ontario.

I havent done it before, which shipping agent would you recommend to use? and should I look for a form on a SARS website to register the good for repair export?

Thats the feeling Im getting, it looks like a 50/50 chance that they might charge you, so Im just trying to minimize the risk of additional costs. Also in theory the part is only exported for repairs so there shouldnt be any VAT charged as it was bought in South Africa and taxes have already been paid, but thats in theory...

Ah ok, you sending it off to XeModex?

Does the job involve any software? If not would it not be easier to import the contactless sensor and have it fitted locally?

The recall only applies in the US/Canada, Volvo left the rest of their customers out in the cold wrt the ETM recall.

Yeap thats the plan, it does envolve the software and as I was going through the forums unfortunately software is locked to your VIN, so second hand is not an option, as revs will be high and computer wont be reading it correctly. Volvo says to reprogram and update software on ETM it will cost R1100, but Im not sure if thats for your original one or second hand one...

Maybe get hold of this Aussie http://www.youtube.com/user/precopster1/videos and ask him about the software thing, he's got a video up on the ETM repair and uses a DICE interface for testing etc.
