custom electronics thread

I have a 1996 Opel Kadett 160is. The problem i'm having is a voltage drop at the petrol float. The petrol level reading that I get fluctuates so I decided to investigate. I put a multi-meter on the power plug to the float. When the ignition is on it reads 10v, but as soon as I start the car it drops to 8v, hence the drop in the petrol reading when I start the car. To get a proper reading I have to check the petrol level when the ignition is on. Any clues as to why there is a drop in voltage and the possible source of it?

there can be so many answers to this question.
lets start with one.WHen a car starts lots of current is required for the starter,So its normal for the voltage to drop on the battery for a second.remember current and voltage are 2 separate things, but we will not get into that.:D

Sounds like a sensor must be replaced.I dont know opels that well but unplug the gauge on the dash and then do your test.See what the reading is then.

Todays tip..check if your cig lighter socket is functional,If not check the fuse.
MOst times this is the cause of this, dont panic and run to the dealer.

also check the ignition supply to the gauge from the cluster.

Have the exact same problem with my Opel Corsa 2000 1.6S, if you figure it out, please PM me the details. I didn't really feel like removing the fuel pump and checking the fuel level sender but my thought was that is the problem.

Do you have any other problems on the car (perhaps there are some other common factors)?

Have you guys thought of asking around on the Opel Owners' Club forum? www.opelownersforum.co.za

I own two of these kinds of cars and when strange problems occur I post on that forum first- They have saved me a ton of money and helped me diagnose the problems with clear and easy to understand walkthroughs.

Yeah I've had some help from there before (but couldn't fix my problem entirely), I wanted to ask there a while back but it's not a pressing problem, my car has some other problems also (it's running lean as a beeatch and the timing seems to be a bit too advanced) which led me to believe my car has suffered some kind of electrical damage, regardless, the car is running (only issue is it's a bit on heavy on the juice) and I don't want to spend too much time on it just now, in fact the only option I've thought of was just taking out the engine and putting a cheap C20XE 8v in there but I have no time really :(

If you are interested in making a trip to JHB, PM me for my mechanic's details. He's a specialist with these cars, he's the only one I trust with both of my babies.

Nah, I'm done spending RRR's on the car, rather just take out the engine and replace it with something better (Apparantly the 8V 2L's are going for very low prices). I've already been to Turbo Boost Tech OPC, the guy knows his stuff but long story short couldn't fix it completely.

maybe this will be handy for dablakmark8

re: arduino and using it in a car

SO what you are asking me if i could help those poor uk guys:sick:
I can but first he would have to send me a gallardo kit:D

Also what they are talking about and in there replys i see they way off point:D
There is so much easier ways to get those wings to do his bidding.
I have designed a thingie in PE for a guy where his NO2(noss) valve opens at certain revs like a turbo...He used it for 3 months and it stopped working,At least i made it work and it was a cheap alternative to that 15000rand mobile pc.

This thing i made cost him R3000.So in saying this i could maybe design a gadget for those wings......but thats for another day.:D

you are missing the point..the car pc is just sommer "nice" for doing other stuff, we are a group of carpc enthusiasts who also dablle in other things

. the batwings are independently controlled by a device called an arduino, all ÂŁ15 worth of it. i pointed the thread to you so you can see how easy it is to do things with the arduino, all R200 worth of it. infinitely flexible, and i believe, right up your alley if you took the blinkers off:-)

I was just kidding:D...besides you get 50% discount to:)as long as i get my hands on that:cool:

werner...thank you very much for the info...I love this board,I was on another subject and did not see the arduino board in that uk post..SO alli can say is nothing but amazin.
So do you have some of these boards already, and who imports them to SA,will like to try and configure them or build my own..:)
GOnna check out the stats..thanks again

I tested the voltage at the power plug to the float, at the bottom of the car, not at the gauge in dash.. Also the voltage stays lower than when the ignition was on, it didn't rise again. Could it be the voltage regulator for the float?
