Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can assist. I ordered a spigen cover anf from amazon the cost was R221. It was couriered by aramex global. It sat in customs for 5 days

Yes i was told the customs charge on a R221 cover is R196 can this be possible

I have refused to pay until i get a detailed breakdown

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Amazon usually adds customs on checkout. Make sure you haven't already paid, as I have never had an issue being charge additional customs after already having paid it to amazon. Maybe the invoice amount is wrong, also it might be marked wrong as electronics which has very high VAT

Ive had a few things shipped over from the states, very much Luxury purchases.

Some of the fees are probably Duties & Taxes, but there will probably also be an admin fee Charged y aramex for "Babysitting" it through customs.

Once you get a proforma invoice you should see what the breakdown is. I use TNT or DHL generally, since they dont give trouble getting you the needed docos.

in your case, you might find the admin fee makes up most of the cost. I havent found a magic number on import duties... but i usually budget an extra 14 % on top of my orders which is pretty close.

http://www.sars.gov.za/ClientSegments/Customs-Excise/Processing/Assessment/Pages/Duties.aspx here is more info

but you could be liable for:

What duties are levied on imported goods?
Three kinds of duties are levied on imported goods:

Customs duties (including additional ad valorem duties on certain luxury or non-essential items)
Anti-dumping and countervailing duties
VAT (which is also collected on goods imported and cleared for home consumption).

I just dont want to go to jail.. Lol

I doubt you can go to jail - don't think its very legal to deliver the item, and then charge you - if they charged you upfront you can refuse and they cans end the item back or destroy it.

Very strange. Since I started using AGS I've purchased 3 phone covers for myself and friends and I didn't have to pay customs or duties on any of them. :/
