Hi does anyone know if my package will be delivered to my door if item was released from customs but did not pay? Was told it's free shipping

You'll probably receive a notification from your local post office to go and pay/collect in about 468 months. Sit tight.

Bought an item for R1 in China. Had to pay R35 in SARS add hope.

You will get a notification slip in your post box from the post office
You will pay the fee when you go collect your parcel
It's usually just the 15% VAT

you may be lucky that it gets given to a courier .if so they will notify you and you pay them for clearing .

ummmmmm ,maybe you should phone customs ,they can .....be helpfull sometimes .they should have contacted you allready for delivery on a big item ,they also use private people for deliveries , ask them.edit ,it also depends on who the freight forwarder is .
