Mobile data price cut demands: Vodacom and MTN respond

Parliament recently told operators that unless they reduce their data prices, it will be done for them. Vodacom and MTN respond.

How a country like Namibia can charge what they do vs what is charged locally is quite something.

Again you can't really blame them. They will change what the market will bear. And considering Vodacom's market share, the market will bear a lot.

Vodacom data prices have not declined at all, I took out a 3 GB Top Up contract four years ago for R149pm, and that same contract is now R169pm.

Ask why others are not following suite to facilitate MTN/Vodacom APN data to customers at a reduced rate because they buy bulk. If the options are there it makes no sense to blame the Carriers.

It is very simple, why reduce prices if customers are prepared to pay. Afrihost and Axxess do not have the market share, and their low prices are an attempt to gain it. Remember businesses reduce prices for one reason only: to gain/stop losing market share.

Look at network coverage in Namibia:

It is tiny

That is cheap to build when most of the population is concentrated in little towns. They have no highway coverage.

In SA, we have 90%+ geographic coverage and nearly every decent road is covered 100%.

Operator logic:

R149 @ 6% inflation for 4 yrs = 149x(1.06^4) = R188

But you are only paying R169 now.
R188 - R169 = R19

R19/R188 = 10% reduction

The solution is people need to vote with their wallets. No one in Vodacom or MTN has put a gun to your head and made you buy their product.

And honestly, I don't care if MTN rips off stupid people. Their stupidity is effectively subsidising my Afrihost mobile data. :twisted:
