Cutting gem squash without risking amputation - how ?

Gem squash for me has a poor ROI for a vegetable. They're hard as rock so you dull your blade opening them and they only taste good if they're loaded with sugar and butter which defeats the vegetableyness of them. I rather avoid.
Yeah...if you're buying that mass-grown ball of unexciting sold in most supermarkets it's nothing special, but eat a squash grown from heirloom seeds and it's as delicious. Something like:

One of the top 3 South African heirloom varieties. This humble little squash is a huge hit in Europe and especially Germany where they are so expensive that they are only offered in high class restaurants. If you grow your own, be prepared to never want to subject yourself to the torture of tasteless, colourless, store-bought, hybrid Gems again.

I like eating gem squash skins as well... :p
Haha, i eat them too, but only if they are soft.

Grant, in future, rather just get the ones already cut, much easier and less dangerous :p

Sissies!

A good old breadknife does the trick.

Love mine with beetroot salad in them. My whole family does this for some reason.

I keep a hacksaw blade for my pumpkins and squashes.
