Hi,

I have a new Nokia Lumia 800 and it needs a micro sim. Is it safe and easy to cut my existing sim to a micro sim?

Thanks

Yes - if done right. Been using a self cut sim in my iPhone 4S since release.

Yes. Provided you do it correctly. It's also not a big risk since a new one will only cost R100.

1. Download a template, normally just a photocopy of a micro-sim with a normal sim overlaid on it, and print it.
2. Trace the outlines of the micro-SIM on the back of the paper using a ruler and pencil.
3. Stick your SIM on to the front of the template using sellotape. Don't use prestik like I did, the card will move during cutting and you'll end up with a skew edge.
4. Cut along the lines using good, sharp scissors.
5. Remove your Micro-SIM.
6. Insert in phone.
7. Laugh the evil laugh (Muhahahahahaha) at beating the system, because you just made a working micro-SIM for free.

I would take it to a cellphone shop like cellucity (I think it is) in Sandton and get it cut for R100

I bought a sim cutter in the UK for R50, just makes the process much simpler.

Yes, but with shipping etc, it costs about the same as, or more than, just doing a SIM-swap. And you'll have to wait a lot longer for delivery than the 24 hours a SIM-swap would take. It's good if you often cut SIM cards but for a once-off it's not really worth it.

How many sim cards you planning on cutting?
If you got the cash, buy a cutter.

Otherwise, you can cut it yourself. I did it. As per the instructions above, get the template. No fancy tools needed, just scissors, and maybe a file to get it further down to size and smooth it off.

I'm sorry but that's a rip-off. A new Micro-SIM costs just R99 from Vodacom! How can they charge the same price for cutting your old one?

But he wants to use the same one he's been using. I got one for free from 8ta. If he gets a new one from a cell service provider, he'll have to pay for the sim swop

This works. Done it on 3 SIMs already.

Yes, that's what I mean, a SIM-swap costs R99. That means you keep your number and get a new micro-SIM, for R99. I enquired when I got my Galaxy S3.

Just called my local Autopage. They said they'll cut it for free. Want to keep my number as it's on contract. Hope they have a template to cut it properly.

if China mall is near you. You can get sim cutter for R25 and it is yours forever.

I have a sim cutter, paid R50 for it, looks like a stapler, I can cut the old blue Vodacom simcards, but not the new red ones.
Good thing about the cutter is that the trim left over after cutting can be used as an "adapter"
