cybertek.co.za is providing what looks to be a very interesting product

It looks like a pure copper connection between your premises and the cybertek premises

This is what I received from cybertek this morning :

".... Once a client has signed a permanent connection contract with Cybertek, we instruct Telkom to install a Permanent connection line at the premises of the respective client. This usually takes about for weeks. Once the line is installed on the clients side Telkom then route the line to Cyberteks' premises. After this we send one of our technicians over to the clients premises and we connect the SDSL router to the Telkom line and then to the clients existing network. We then place a router on our side and configure it to connect to the router on the clients premises. After this occurs the client now has a permanent connection which is fully functional ....

and we have no limits on downloads like the ADSL has. Average speeds are similar to that of a 64K ISDN dial-up connection, but can burst up to 512K at quiet times .... "

This is R1195 inclusive of Telkom line rental ... so doesn't look too bad, just a shame its only available in Durban ... why does other ISPs not offer this service ?

Any advice / comments about somebody who does have a clue how this would work and how its implemented ???

Its basicly just a tie line with SDSL modems at each end. You have to be very near to the other premesis for it to work well, there is a longer description of it on baspnet's forums somewhere.

Also sounds similar to an analogue setup, the reason why ISP's don't supply us with a service like that is because it's too "work intensive", if I can use those words. Its easier to sign up 100 clients on normal ADSL connection subscriptions than to install SDSL for all 100 of them as an option.

yep ... looks like a analogue service to me as well .... the only thing that really concerns me (or what I don't understand) is how an ISP can offer say 100 clients with this service ?

that is about 100 * 64k = +- 6 - 7 Mbits of traffic

now, what ISP in South Africa has a 6 - 7 Mbit connection to an upstream provider ?

I might be wrong here or maybe I just don't understand how the internet operates in South Africa. been in UK for 4 years where I started to work in the internet industry and it works completely different over here

Yeah - sounds like an analouge leased line type of service - pretty useless - again - what is contention ratio, how many fixed IP's, SLA?, etc etc etc

When are providers going to learn that they simply cannot bullsh*t us with marketing material any more!

It actually makes me irate. It seems as if they think because Telkom work the way they do that we will glibly accept whatever marketing blurb and sign up in droves...
