Greetings,

Apparently, there is a Telkom ADSL D.I.Y. setup option, which saves one the +-R400 techie installation fee. Can someone tell me what this actually entails i.e. besides setting up the router/modem oneself, is there any other actual physical installation?!?

Thanks in advance,

Nicholas

Nope just pick up your modem and connect it to your line, that's it. It's called 'self-install'. If you're ordering over the phone ask for it specifically.

It's not really just that simple. You need a microfilter for each line that has a telephone, and you also have to do a 'verification' on the line through Telkom's website else it won't work at all.

That said, it's a fairly straightforward job. You shouldn't have problems doing it. Search 'ADSL Self install' on the forums for some more info.

I'm busy doing mine this weekend. Everything you need comes in the package including 2 micro filters, cables and instruction guide. Looks pretty straightforward.

So other than the +-R100pm Line rental, and the Adsl Line Rental+ISP (Cybersmart) at R169 a month, when I Order the Self Install Option, is there any other costs involved? Do you have to pay for that installation kit with the micro filters etc etc?

Oops, sorry...I see this is An OLD thread.

Well 2 weeks is a long time in MyADSL land, but you don't pay for the installation kit, and you get a free router when you do the Self Install Option.

I don't think there are any other costs unless Cybersmart charge you an access fee, but most don't.

In the details page of the self install option at Telkom website:

"You have the choice of a USB or a WiFi modem with 4 Ethernet ports"

Which modem should be chosen?

What if your pc does not have a wireless network card? Can you connect a wifi modem to your pc with wires? If so, which wires - usb or network?

Can anyone rate the modems offered against the Billion or other brands?

Not yet on ADSL (waiting for August price reductions to kick in)

With the self install I got the (Marconi)Telkom ADSL Premium Combo modem/router which has both USB and 4 Ethernet ports as well as wireless support.

Oh, exactly what I wanted to ask about, can you freely chose between the 100WR (something like that) and the Premium Combo router? I actually need the Marconi one because it's easier to get the local/international bandwidth splitting working on the one. Usually they give the 100WR model :/

Also where is our closest Telkom Direct shop? But I'm just being lazy now :p

As far as I know you can choose which modem you want but before I had a chance to ask they brought the one I wanted anyway.:D
Two things I don't like about it is that the lights are on top of the case and I would have preferred them to have been on the front like my WRT54G router, and a black case would have been better than white, but since it's "free" I'm not complaining.

The telkom shops were all out of stock except for Longbeach mall on the Noordhoek side of Ou Kaapse Weg when I got mine.
For you it's best is to go to Blue Route mall and if they are out of stock ask them to phone the other shops to save you running around.

EDIT: If you have more than two phones in the house you better get extra micro filters since you only get two with the modem and you need one for each phone.

So it is better to go with the (Marconi)Telkom ADSL Premium Combo modem/router? I'll ask for that one then. When does this "free modem" offer end?

My only problem with this Self-Install is that my Alarm's cable is hardwired (without standard plug in other words) into my telephone line, so I need to put a plug onto that to plug it into the Micro Filter. But I dont like it that I can , oops, plug out my Alarm that easily. I'll need to glue it with my glue-gun or something. Will see what I'll do.

id13, not sure as to when that offer ends as it's already been extended over the past months, but when I fetched my modem I was told that it ends at the beginning of August, still this is open to change yet again I guess.

Just heard from one of my friends that there was no stock of telkom modems in Cape Town, looks like there's been a rush before 1st August.

I recently ordered a self install and it was a mission to find a modem in Joburg. I tried about 5 stores before a lady at one of the stores directed me to midrand which apparently was the only store in Gauteng that had stock.

When i got there I walked out with the second last one. I think Telkom were caught with their pants down wrt modem stock..

This was about two weeks ago so maybe the situation is better now...

I want that free modem that telkom offers with SIO. Wonder if this would work. According to some questions I threw at the telkom 10219 line, this could work.
1)Get the modem with SIO and opt in for the ADSL Rental(Access) only. (R245)
Then as soon as everything is good to go,
2)Cancel the line. According to telkom I should not Pay any "penalties" of any sort and will even get part of my rental back on a Pro-Rata rate. ok,if you say so.
3)Reapply for a line from Cybersmart and only pay R169 per month to them onwards.

Result. Nice free modem, nice cheap ISP. But.........
Will telkom not charge me a month's Rental for Canceling my ADSL Line?

Somehow I don't think you'll get away with it, if it was possible it would have been done many times before.
On top of that telkom can turn around and disconnect your phone line then you'll have no ADSL or phone.

I actually recall people talking about doing this, sucessfully...

You might get charged one months rental though, but that isn't a bad price to pay for a free modem.

Why would you want to do this when you get a free router with Cybersmarts bundled offering anyway?

Thanks for your reply earlier Mr.H, I almost forgot about it. Longbeach Mall is pretty far out, I guess I'll try Blue Route first.

EHV, when I got my modem in the 1st week of this month Blue Route was out of stock, so when you go there ask them to phone around to see who has modems.

BTW: Longbeach is not that far from where you are (maybe a 20min drive one way), it's at the bottom of Ou Kaapse Weg (Noordhoek side);)

EDIT: as for taking telkom "for a ride" to get a modem, well even if it's possible I'd consider it stealing and just not the right way to go about things, but then thats just the way I feel about it.

Oh well, the Hunt for the Free-modem-sio-kit it on! The First Telkom shop(closest) had stock few minutes ago when I called them. Now suddenly they don't have. Off to the next one later today then. Hopefully I will be faced with a choice of what modem I (the customer) want.
Mega 100WR?
Supposedly better Wi-Fi range than Premium Combo.
Marconi ADSL Premium Combo?
Supposedly better with Routesentry.

I bet that when i walk into that Telkom shop, they will throw another choice at me that I was not even prepared for. :(
(Last time I went there she did point to the Wireless gateway (R1999:eek:) and told me that you get a free modem with the SIO kit - I'm not getting my hopes up)

Anyone want to make a recomendation on what Router to decide on?
Anyone?

I merely 'got' the mega 100WR. No choice, nothing. And after 2 days of struggling I got routesentry set up and multiple accounts running!! :D

Now to figure out how to use the Wireless function of the router to connect to the wireless router next door. . .
