D.I.Y. car service

Car services are expensive and as it's relatively easy to change filters, oil etc I would prefer to service my car myself.

Does any one know of DIY workshops in the Randburg/Northcliff area that would enable me to do this?

Interesting concept - never heard of them myself. Always done the oil change in my own garage in the past. It's still good to send it to your regular service center at least once a year for general checks.

Thanks for the reply. Doing straightfoward repairs yourself can save any one a great deal of money over time. For more complicated car repairs / checks, I agree with you - go to an expert

This type of thing only exists in the first world. Such a place would be too expensive to run in this country because the trash who live here would steal all the equipment.

You only need a pair of ramps, a jack, trestles, your tools and piece of land to do this basic maintanance, what do you need the whole workshop for?

I think there is some sort of recycling thing, where you drop your used oil, just don't know if all garages offer this service.

OK, so a 900+ km drive then?
Seems more environmentally friendly to leave it in the veld.

I know down here in the Cape we have a workshop like this for bikes.

There was one in Honeydew a few years ago, you'd pay the garage about R100 an hour. We did a minor service on my polo this way a few times.

Some complexes and estates don't allow you to work on your car (looks bad).

Could only have been decided by someone who is not mentally capable of doing any maintenance.

You don't need much - if the car is too low, I drive on to 3 bricks in front of each front wheel - easy.
Fuel stations without a workshop won't take the oil... I take mine to a school's recycling area.

For coolant, I let the water evaporate, then burn the rest. No idea whether that's any good.
