The can tells you coverage per litre, but it doesn't know your room. You'd still have to measure walls, subtract doors and windows, work out how many coats you actually need, and convert all that into litres yourself, then round up so you're not running to the shop mid-second-coat. That's basically what the calculator does for you in a few seconds, plus it accounts for waste so you're not stuck with three-quarters of a tin left over, or short by half a litre right before you finish the last wall.

You always over provision on paint, you never work it out exactly.

You ideally want to have half a can left for anything you might need to touch up down the line.

Granted not half a 20 litre, but still.

Hence you ignore the doors and windows and pretend they are full walls so you have some left after.

Guessing you’ve never actually painted before?

Fair point, and yeah I've definitely bought a fifth tin "just in case" more times than I can count. The calculator isn't really trying to replace that instinct though, it's more for the planning stage, working out roughly what you're in for before you're standing in the paint aisle guessing between a 5L and a 20L.

Doors and windows matter more than people think too, a room with three doors and big windows can be a full tin cheaper than a blank box room the same size, so ignoring them isn't always safer, sometimes it just means you overpay.

And I'd rather have the extra half tin from rounding up on purpose than from the calculation being wrong. Different problem, same result really.
