Hi all,

2-3 months ago we purchased a new D-Link 2500u router.

It is configured correctly, connects and works fine...for the most part.

The last 2-3 weeks we have been experiencing repeated 'stalling' of the connection.

I haven't been able to isolate a pattern. The stalls seem to be at random times. Sometimes days apart - it is usually on 24/7.

If you log on to the admin' console, the overview shows everything as working fine. The line is connected, there are IPs, etc.

When it 'stalls', the overview reflects as per usual but there is no throughput. Nothing loads.

The only remedy I've found is to go into the admin' console and reboot it, after which it works fine again.

The D-Link 'site is 1. terrible, and 2. outdated. The firmware on there appears to be older than what's on the router.

Any suggestions or similar stories, anyone?

Thanks, Nic

Perhaps yours does the same as what mine does, it just stops doing dns resolution, mind you the lightning strikes it's endured might have something to do with that :P

Try manually setting your dns servers on your pc, works for me. try google's dns (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or which ever you prefer.

Phone D-Link support, very good and you don't get routed to an Indian call centre; local support week days 08h00 - 22h00.

Fantastic after-sales service including warranty swap-outs.

Contact the local D-Link branch and ask them to give you the latest firmware.

I've been running my D-Link DSL-2500U for weeks without any issues.

Is your router getting enough airflow so that it doesn't overheat? It would only overheat if you place it like in a cupboard or in a closed space.

Is your line noisy (crackles) - pick up the handset and press "1", cover the microphone on the handset and listen for any line noise (it should be silent) - primitive method, but will let you know if there is a possible line issue.
Then get Telkom to do a full test on your ADSL sync speed - I had to have my 4096 line limited to around 3500, as our line had noise issues. This fixed the problem for me (together with the manual DNS setting per Pellito above). I'm currently running a D-Link 2650U.

Not in my experience. Although maybe I bought a dud or something. But I have seen many complaints on myBB about that exact same model. Do a search maybe.

Anyway, bought a brand new one. (it is the one with Wifi right?)

1. The setup cd refuse to work (not that I need it ,but still)

2. On setup the config menu kept on freezing as soon as you get to the Wifi portion. After a while I got through but Wifi disconnects intermediately. Finally decided to download latest firmware from the website (which was very confusing and many of the FTP links where down) and started the flash.
Apparently it was the incorrect model firmware (no warning like with other routers) and I bricked the router. Phoned support who’s only suggestion was to replace it.

3. The physical build of the product in comparison to other router are very poor.

NoLogic001: always use the web interface for configuring the router and never an installation CD.

I have to agree with you that the upgrading of the D-Link router's firmware is terrible.

And no, the DSL-2500U doesn't have WiFi! It has only 1x RJ11 (ADSL port) and 1x RJ45 (100Mbps LAN) port.

yeah I know, still why include the Cd if it does not work.

oh and it was the D-Link DSL-2540U, sorry

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I will give manual DNS a try tomorrow...

The D-Link websites (local and abroad) are >terrible<. Broken links are the order of the day and the local one has more 404s than the SAPs have missing children cases.

...two of which are the Support and Contact pages. Insert rolling eyes here.

Out of all of the routers we've ever had, I like this one the least. It's not the most intuitive admin' console and given me the most hassles, so far.

As for line noise - it's not perfect. I can tell you that without checking, but it hasn't really given us hassles at any stage. This stalling issue is a new thing - not from initial setup. It also hasn't affected any of the others.

If the DNS fails to cure things, I'll look to Telkom for an answer.

Many thanks,

Nic
