Greetings earthlings

I have been contracted by a customer of mine to set up an extension into her house from a pre-existing ADSL line coming from her business premises located on the property next door.

The infrastructure is already in place as she was using a Linksys Wireless 2.4 GHz Broadband Router.

The Linksys Router has subsequently stopped functioning in the required way so we have replaced it with the D-Link.

Now, the customer basically requires the router to be able to allow anyone in the house to work wirelessly on the internet using the connection which has been fed through via CAT5 LAN cable from the property next door. So the LAN cable is plugged into the D-Link and the settings just needs to be set up to allow anyone to just connect wirelessly to the internet.

Without entering any sort of settings, if I just run a normal LAN cable from the D-Link to the end-user pc (a laptop), everything seems to be working fine.

However, when I try to enable to Wireless on the laptop (after unplugging the LAN cable), I cannot go on the internet (but I can still access the 192.168.1.1 interface to change settings).

I've tried many different WAN settings, including Bridge and PPPoE to no avail.

Can anybody steer me in the right direction as this is causing me endless sleepless nights.

Kind Thanks for any help in advance.

Hi Abhavanda

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I've looked everywhere in the settings but there is nothing that allows you to enable it. If it helps, the WLAN light is flashing on the router. I always assumed that that meant that the wireless is in fact working.

Am I wrong in this assumption?

NiteFenix, you can download the manual from http://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/ADSL/DSL-2640U_BRU_C/Description/DSL-2640U_C1_Manual_1.00_ENG.pdf

To enable the wireless (see p67 in the manual), goto Wireless -> Basic -> tick the Enable wireless -> Save/Apply.
Also ensure that the router is set in Wireless AP mode (Wireless -> Wireless Bridge -> Select Access Point under AP mode).

Just remember to either enable security features or make use of the MAC filter.

Hi Pada

Kind Thanks for the reply.

I'll try it out tommorow morning when I go to see the customer.

Will provide you with feedback once I get back, but I believe this might just work!

Wish me luck

I've enabled the wireless but still, if I unplug the LAN cable the connection dies. Any other ideas?

Just to add...now all of a sudden (even with the LAN cable plugged in) the 192.168.1.1 interface won't load.

Although the Internet still works when I plug the LAN cable into the router with the flylead.

I'm getting quite a bit frustrated with this problem.

If you can recommend another option for resolving this problem, I am open to suggestions.

Thanks

Jonathan

PS. A Reset if the router also yielded no results in resolving either of the problems.

PPS. After a hard reset it seems wireless seems to be working now. It's just intermitent, meaning it's on and off the whole time. Could it be the wireless hsdpa card or settings?

With my 2640U, if I remember right as long as one PC is connected via cable the ones connected via wireless couldn't access the router's setup page.

I've heard of people with Vista having trouble with wireless networks, connecting and disconnecting the whole time, disabling/removing IPv6 solved that problem for them.

I had issues with my DLink DWL-2100AP, that its wireless also stopped functioning, then I had to reset it to work again. A firmware upgrade did fix that issue though.

You can always check if your Hardware (H/W) version matches any of the 3 images in the http://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/ADSL/DSL-2640U/Firmware/readme.html
Then you can download the latest corresponding firmware for the router and see if that doesn't solve some issues.

If you are unable to connect to the web interface, see if you can "telnet 192.168.1.1". In my opinion I will always disable Administration access via wireless connections for security reasons.

I've enabled the wireless but still, if I unplug the LAN cable the connection dies. Any other ideas?
What exactly are you trying here? Are you connected with both LAN & Wireless from the same PC and then you disconnect the LAN cable?

Pada:

I was just using the LAN connection to set up the router. But what I'm saying is that with the LAN cable plugged in the Internet connection works and when plugged out and working on Wireless the Internet connection is dead.

However since the reset managed to get everything sorted, the Wireless seems to be working on the Internet now, but what I will do just as a safety measure is update the firmware. I always find that helps resolve a number of issues when it comes to computer equipment.

To answer your question Browser:

On the laptop I was setting everything up from the O/S is Windows XP and every other pc in the house is on XP. There may however be some guests who have laptops with Vista in the foreseeable future.

I'm having the Vista issue now.

Will try removing IPV6, but if there's anything else you guys can recommend I'd appreciate it.

Just a side note it's Windows Vista Home Premium.
