D-Link 2750U Slower connection speeds

Hi Guys

Hope i am posting in the correct place. I am with cybersmart, i have a 1mb line with them. Yesterday i bought a D-link 2750U wireless router. I installed it, and everything worked fine. I then decided to run a speed test, and the results were shocking really. My ping to cape town from pe, was around 50ms which is fine, however, my download speeds were averaging 50mb/s, and upload 10mb/s. It even went as low as 38mb/s for download. I was using a mega 100wr router previously, and my downloads would be averaging 80mb/s and even over 1 mb, and my upload was 0.30mb/s. Also on xbox live in halo reach, before i installed the d-link, My nat was open, packet loss low, and upstreeam bandwidth average, now with the d-link, the upstream bandwidth is WARNING! Im not too clued up with routers and the settings etc, so some help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.
 
You need to get your speed things in order. It is impossible to get 50mb/s on a 1mb/s line.

I would suggest that you go to the stats page and post your stats here - specifically your line attenuation, SNR margins and line speed. It would be best if you can post a screenshot and upload it to like imagehost.co.za. Also have a look if your ADSL modem is using ADSL2+ or G.DMT modulation.

Lastly, since you're having slow speeds on the D-Link, I would also suggest that you go back to your Telkom router and get its stats too, and then perform another speed test on like www.speedtest.net.

Thanks for the reply, What i meant was 0.50mb/s my apologies. Like i said i am not too clued up with routers, but i will try work my way around it and find all that info out. Thanks again.
 
Out of Interest Pada, what modulation should the modem be using? ADSL2+ or G.DMT?
 
It really depends on your situation.

If your downstream line attenuation values are high and you're using a connection slower than 6Mbps, I would suggest G.DMT modulation.
To be able to get 10Mbps, you will need to have a low downstream line attenuation value (25dB or lower) and use ADSL2+ modulation.

Sorry i click post earlier before i wrote anything, and not sure why it posted twice, anyway, use the second url. To me ( not knowing much about routers) it looks like the values are pretty high. Should i enable QoS? Would that make a difference?
 
Rather just leave out QoS. It won't make any noticeable difference, unless you perhaps know a lot about it - more than I know about it in any case ;)

Your stats are all fine - or at least good enough to get a stable 8Mbps ADSL connection.
The SNR Margin & attenuation values are displayed as 10x their actual values. So the SNR margin that is displayed as 340, is in fact just 34.0dB.

If you ask me, you're on a saturated/congested Exchange, so your issues has nothing to do with your ADSL modem. There is a thread dedicated in this subforum to congested Exchanges, which would be worth your while to look at.

Seems you are correct. I tested with the telkom router, and got the same stats. Just strange that i only noticed it after i put the new router in. Thanks for your help man. I suppose its pointless trying to speak to telkom about it.
 
The stats should be roughly the same, but the question is whether the speeds was the same too ;)

With the congested exchanges, you'll find that the speeds vary a lot throughout the day. Usually you'll get good speeds after midnight, unless you're in a residential area where there are lots of heavy downloaders.
