Anyone have an opinion on D-Link DSL-300G ?

I will be running this modem on a dedicated P500 with firewall, ICS etc. on a home network.
Telkom is due to install my line anyday now and I don't want to spend R2000 for a modem I could pay R650 for, on the other hand I don't want to spend R650 for a worthless modem.

Altho the 504G hasnt gotten any positive comment so far.

Also, who should supply me with the 2 microfilters telkom require ? the ppl I am getting the modem from? or telkom?

Telkom originally supplied me with the microfilters but apparantly they won't supply them anymore if you've purchased your modem from someone else.

You'll have to go and buy them from telkoms' office (Roughly R40-00) because the technicians are not allowed to sell them to you (even though they've got them handy)

I was also given a microfilter free with my router (Netgear DG814) but I'm not too sure if the d-link ones come with one.

Hope this helps - sorry, no opinion on the D-Link DSL-300G but from the product information pages you shouldn't have a problem. Just be wary of line attenutation.

Bought August 2003
Quality and usability both excellent.
The modem has never hung.
The modem also comes with a monitor displaying the upload and download capabilities of the adsl line.
When downloading the monitor shows you the speed at which data is being sent and received.

I recommend this as an entry level adsl modem as this model does not have any router functions.
D-Link has various other models locally like the DSL-300 which does have the built-in router.
The DSL-300 is Telkom approved and the DSL-200I is in the process.

The DSL-200I retails for R650

Hi DMN*
I am still using the DSL-200I for my connection and I have also sold it to 3 more ADSL users using it happily on XP.
THe DSl-200I Retails for R650 and the DSL-300G for R999.
The DSL-300G has a built in RJ45 lan port whereas the DSL-200I is a pure usb modem.
The DSL-300G has no built in router or any other major features.
My suggestion is if you are running XP Pro get the DSL-200I you can then setup a software firewall.
I was originally going to purchase the DSL-300G because I wanted to share intenet access on my intranet, my supplier didnt have stock so I purchased the DSL-200I.
I have not looked back I am now sharing my intenet connection through XP Pro and its firewall enabled all for free.

To answer your questions:
My modem came with 1 pots filter I am not sure if the DSL-300G comes with one.
I am using the lower end D-Link it works so I have no problem in recomending any D-link ADSL modem.
p.s. I sell and use allot of D-Link networking products far better product than c-net which I also use.
