D-Link DSL-2640U Bridged not working

Hi all

Need some help here please?

I have a D-Link DSL-2640U. This evening SWAMBO informs me that it stopped working.

The setup is bridged, and I dial in to WebAfrica or AfriHost as required from the home laptop wirelessly.

So I reboot the rooter, restart the laptop. Nada, the laptop tries to connect wirelessly but then fails. Over ethernet, everything is fine and works 100%.

So I reset the router, delete the current settings and re-enter the bridged settings. Again, wireless refuses to work (this while laptop is next to router).

I hardcode the IP into the laptop, thinking maybe the DHCP is acting up, but still it cannot get a connection. This trick has worked before when I had trouble with the router after a power failure.

So I phone WebAfrica, we try all sorts of setups, still nothing.

In frustration, I setup the router to go PPoE to WA and whadayaknow, wireless works fine - laptop connects, PS3 connects and we are able to surf the interweb.

Now why would the wireless work fine with PPoE but not in bridged mode!? This does not make sense to me since it has been working fine both in bridged and PPoE mode for the past year or so.

If anyone can shed some light, please do. I am clueless here, and even the WA support people cannot understand why this is happening.

Got same router. Also had all things working fine on bridged. Now got same prob, struggling to get the laptop to work properly with the wireless. It connects but I cant browse or do file sharing.

So a +1 here looking for the correct way to set up a router in bridged with 1 wireless for data sharing + internet

Is your sharing service activated in computer management?

How weird is this:

late last night, after I got the router to work in PPoE mode, I tried the bridged mode one more time - and it worked!!!

I didn't change anything else, didn't do anything differently, but somehow everything is back to normal and I can connect to the router wirelessly and dial in to WE and Afrihost.

Naks, the DSL 2640U can be configured in half-bridge mode too. Thats to say if you wanted to use something like RouteSentry, and only dial one PPPoE connection from the PC.

One of my friends is using it in that configuration: letting the router dial the international account. That way his parents can use the internet AND he can still dial local only accounts from his PC to play games with local only cap.

The router doesn't have a mode called half-bridge though. Its simply 2 WAN interfaces: 1 bridge mode & 1 PPPoE

Ok, I get it.

So I setup a WAN for WebAfrica on the router via PPoE, and I setup another WAN in bridge mode.

But then how do I tell my laptop to ignore WA when I want to dial up to AfriHost? Won't it use WA by default as soon as I connect to the Wireless signal?

By default, when you dial your Afrihost account, it shouldn't use the WA one. Unless you have deselected that option that the PPPoE connection should no longer be the default gateway for the remote network.
So if you want to use Afrihost instead, make sure that you go to your Afrihost PPPoE dialup connection -> Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties -> Advanced -> ensure that the "Use default gateway on remote network" option is selected.

Alternatively, run the following before dialing Afrihost: route delete 0.0.0.0
That would ensure that the traffic would not go through the router by default.
