So fiber is eventually available at my home. I need to buy a router. I have 2 options on the Axxess website. ZyXEL VMG8924-B10A or D-Link DSL-224. Would the more expensive one be better?

Secondly, those are the options from them. Any others I should possibly consider?

Depends on your budget. Do you need wireless? UBNT is a lot more user friendly than Mikrotik, although Mikrotik has a quick set fgeature that loads all the needed defaulst for you.

Have a look at scoop.co.za and dbg.co.za

Can't really speak to fiber, but my ZyXEL I got when I went VDSL was an utter piece of crap, I ended up burning it on the braai in ceremonial fashion. Replaced with an ASUS, rock solid, expensive router, but the best money I've ever spent on a router.

I assume they also do fiber routers and I would blindly trust them based on my experience. Never ZyXEL, never!

also if you email the guys on dbg.co.za that you are a mybb member, you get a discount :)

My ZyXEL from Afrihost (fibre) came broken and I was able to return it fortunately. Mikrotik is the way to go

I managed to get my hands on a second hand Mikrotik Routerboard 750. I don't know how good it is and doesn't have wifi so will need a separate AP (Unifi). Now... I have absolutely no clue on how to set this thing up. This is way beyond my ability lol. How do I do the quick configuration?

Firstly, follow this procedure to ensure you have the factory defaults:

Turn off the device power.
Hold the reset button and do not release.
Turn on the device power and wait until the USER LED labeled with “ACT” starts flashing.
Now release the button to clear configuration.
Wait for a few minutes for the router to clear and restore the factory settings.

Taken from http://www.mikrotik.com.my/reset-to-factory-default-settings/

By default, the router will have IP 192.168.88.1 plug it into your PC with an ethernet cable and navigate to http://192.168.88.1

The default username is admin with no password. Once logged in, select quickset from the top left (t6his assumes a fairly recent firmware) and use the wizard to setp your router. The factory defaults are fine for Vumatel. If you need OpenServe settings, select PPOE from quickset and let it configure the router for you.

I don't have fibre just yet (apparently going live on the 17th May), still have ADSL for now. Do I need to do anything different for ADSL? Where would I enter username and pass?

The RB750 isn't an ADSL router. To use it with ADSL you'd need a separate modem or router for the ADSL connection.

Correct, I have a tplink modem which will be connected in bridge mode, the mikrotik will be the router. The ADSL username and password would be configured on the mikrotik.

OK, when you use quickset, choose PPPoE and there will be boxes on the page for username and password. Enter your details in there. Heres a screenshot from my Mikrotik https://goo.gl/photos/hTe8jdiZsrQSvTcs6

Once you are happy with the settings, scroll to the bottom and click 'Apply Configuration'. the router will take a few mins to reconfigure and then reboot, but after that should just work.

For some reason I can't get it to connect. I reset the router to factory and then loaded the default config. Went to Quickset and chose PPPOE, entered username and pass, everything else looks fine. Clicked apply and nothing happened. Router didn't reboot. Did a manual reboot and still nothing. It says PPPOE status: Disconnected. Internet doesn't work. Any ideas?

Don't bother with a mikrotik unless your technically inclined, if you are using a quick set setup then why are you bothering with it :).

Make sure the ethernet cable from your DSL router is connected to eth1 on the Mikrotik. the default configuration sets eth1 as the WAN port. If that doesn't work, click the log button on the left. The log window might give you some clue about what is going wrong.

Hey, I know you not a fan of these Mikrotik routers, but some of us do want to learn :)

Think that is my mistake. I had to connect ethernet to mikrotik eth5 port in order to connect to winbox, guess I need to change it to eth1
