D-Link vs. Netgear 4 port routers

NetGear, cos I have one and Im very happy with it.
 
NO to D-Link.

Netgear is quality and very well supported. The router setup/layout etc. are probly the easiest of any I've seen. I had a D-Link one, the support people @ D-link even send me the wrong firmware update... needless to say its useless now...

I'm very happy with the Netgear DG834 router. U can even run it in modem mode, and thus have multiple PPPOE connection...
 
Im using the New Telkom Marconi router. 4 port. It's really good actually. Using PPPOE, as well as DHCP, setting up multiple computers with auto IP is a breeze. I also connected an additional 8 port switch to the router, and had an effective 13 ports for a lan that worked 100%...
 
I use a Netgear Wireless cards and a wireless access point and their ADSL wireless router at home without hassle.

I had some hassles with the ADSL router but that was due to Telkom fiddling at the exchange.
 
The latest Netgear firmware for the DG834 router add's a VPN concentrator which i found very usefull if you know someone else with a netgear router because you can join networks with them. The new firmware also ADSL 2+ support. I don't know how usefull ADSL 2+ support will be in South Africa with the fastest lines only being 512 kb but one can only hope that next year Telkom will upgrade everyone to 24mb adsl 2+ lines ;) .

Just don't try and get help from Netgear themselves. I have used their online logging system and all the advice are the simple things that I have tried before. You shouldn't need support if the product works gr8 out the box like it should. :p

I never had reason to contact them. what I was refering to was the firmware, help on the site and general work they put into the products and keeping them up to date, like the new 2.x update for DG834 )

Hell, how on earth any1 can call that thing a router is beyond me. I don't even want to call the netgear a router. But I'll call it an ADSL Router, it atleast have router features. That telkom **** is a modem with 4 ethernet ports.

The Netgrear DG834 works perfectly in router mode (it dials itself, no pppoe session on the pc). U can block everything and only allow what u want and the layout of this features are dead easy.

Then just go to:
http://your.router.ip/setup.cgi?next_file=mode.htm

and whala, u can put it in modem mode if u really want to. Great for using with Mikrotik, but then I guess u don't really need to buy a ADSL router...

I've worked with about 6 different "ADSL routers" in the UK and here and I prefer the Netgear DG834.

never heard of them

Linksys has excellent products, service rocks, prices are lower than netgear and d-link. So I see no point of buying the later.

But hey it is personal preference, so that's just my opinion
 
Ok chill SnowWar...
I cant help it that it's worked 100% As much as I hate Telkom, that product has been nothing but great. No ping issues, no speed issues, no setup issues, no firewall issues, we have multiple computers running 24/7...
Not everybody has ULTRA REQUIREMENTS from their hardware. My advise was purely there to illustrate that if anybody gets a similar item, they know what to expect.

Also, I know a decent amount of the BASICS of home computing , nothing more... so my definition of router is flawed then... but what i have does what it does well for my needs. I know this much...

PS, this is a new model, the older one apparently had major issues.

DLINK, NetGear, LinkSys...but what about Billion??? Anyone have a Billion Modem/Router and want to comment on it??

hmm,I'll have to agree with nrg_wp, my Marconi's been working perfectly fine with multiple pc's sharing the connection as well as extra ports for LAN's. Although, I'm not too sure what else people expect their ADSL routers to do.
 
that's my point spetz. For the basic home user, it is more than enough.. Maybe the post originator should describe what his requirements are exactly...
 
Dlink is good

have installed 2 dlink 604T (4 port wireless adsl router).. no problems so far; setup was easy; just changed username & password to get it going.
 
cool.. seems like i should go for Netgear then. anyone got the prices of their modems, as well as where i could pick one up? i'm in cape town.
