Hi all, im in a bit of a rut deciding on whether to buy a TP-Link or a D-Link to replace this POS Netgear DGN2200v3 AKA N300 (my 2nd one from RMA).

Reason to change it? Line continuously De-synchronizes (id say about 30 times per day) then re-syncs and connects, telkom has done everything in the book to try solve this but no dice...

Mweb told me that Telkom specialists have huge amounts of problems with this make and model.

What im planning to go for:

TP-Link WDR4900 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router for R1300 @ DBG.co.za

-4xGbit ports
-2/5gHz bands
-2x USB

Now does anyone have a good non bias review on this, I would like you to be as critical as possible even if it gets hot etc so i wont have to buy yet another one...

And also a counter review for D-Link.

Thank you.

On our new ADSL line at the office we couldn't get any modem to work (that worked perfectly before) so we ended up getting a Telkom branded D-Link DSL-2750U. Works perfectly.

Has this started happening since the recent upgrades?

The line started to drop about 3.5/4 weeks ago.

+1 on the Telkom branded D-Link DSL-2750U.

While I haven't used TP-link so I cant comment on them,I can say that I've had only two modems in the last 8 or so years the first was a d-link adsl only router and then I upgraded over a year ago to the Telkom branded D-Link DSL-2750U because I sometimes need to use 3g data and both routers have served me well with never a days problem.

Very reliable IMO and experience.

One thing's for sure, i'll never buy a Telkom branded router...

I have the 2750u, been using it for 2 days and seems decent. Also had connectivity fluctuations and the Telkom guys came out and recommended the 2750u because it works well on the network (low noise).

I bought the router from loot but after plugging it in and going in to type my ISP details, it already had an @Telkom address programmed in. It was a brand new router though.... So go figure.

In summary, no complaints on my 2750u so far.

I haven't compared the routers, but I did buy a TP Link TD- W8970 from Uniterm Direct.
I did not buy via the web site. I contacted them via the online system and mentioned that I'm a MyBB member.
I received a very decent discount.

Got quoted on an overnight courier service which I accepted, although I have never received an overnight package, due to the fact I'm not situated in a major city area.
For the first time ever I did actually receive my package the following morning at 10:00.

The TP Link was super easy to set up.
The QoS seems to work decent. The Bandwidth management is pretty easy to use.
I'm enjoying the the USB ports. It can be setup as mass storage, ftp, media server and print server.
At the moment I'm still struggling to get my PS3 to recognize all the media, but the mass storage is not an issue at all.

The wireless is very good and i have had no disconnects, etc.
The menu system is easy to work with.
You will be able to flash the TP Link with 3rd party software afik.

Not 100% sure, but the Billion I bought from Telkom was flashed with Telkom firmware and I could not do any firmware updates . Not sure if you could flash it with 3rd party software.

I'm not nocking the Netgear. I've never used it, but I am enjoying my TP Link.

Thanks for that, the only problem I see is with the PS3 media server, can you give me more info on what seems to be the problem?

It picked up some of the movies, but not all of them. I need to spend time with this.
I changed a file name on one of the movies and it was then detected, but the same did not happen on my other testers.
I definitely dont want to change filename's for all my video content though.
I might convert some of them to AVI.
Mkv are on the list of files that can be detected though.
Most of the episodes are mkv
Will try to test tomorrow.
The MP3's and pics had no problem.

On my PS3, MKV isnt shown simply because its not supported, but all my AVI and MP4's show perfectly.

I will have to check. I think you are right. It might be mp4's.

Edit:
Just checked on my PS3 and you were correct.

I will try to spend more time with this tomorrow afternoon and see what is going on or maybe I must contact Uniterm Support.

IMO, its the host location that is the problem, are you using WMP to create the media server?

Any thing from D link thats about R1000-1300?
What would be the purpose of that? I bought my 2500u new for under R150 and it's been (and continues to be) the most stable router I've ever used to this day...

It has built in surge protection... but yeah I get your point. The thing is, not everyone wants a full-featured gigabit switch with wireless capability. DSL speeds arent in excess of 10Mbps at the moment, so a reliable 1-port ADSL router without gigabit or wireless is all you need, if you have another kind of far superious wireless router such as a Mikrotik which you can then use on any modem of your choice

I stream media to the PS3 and i share files on the lan, so a dual band + GBE is perfect.
