OK
What is the general opinion on this camera?

D300 NOT the D300S.

So no video.

I wonder since I see them going for quite nice prices lately and while picture quality is hindered by older tech, this camera is a weather sealed, magnesium body and has a bunch of functionality.

So does functionality = better picture ?

I think the IQ is on part with a 7D - so not hindered horribly?

Awesome camera. Who needs video anyway? Also, although I would love the 36MP on the D800, the 12MP on my D90 is actually more than enough... I wonder when the D400 will come out. Must be soon. I'm sure prices on second hand D300's will be even better when it does.

Having the pixels is one thing. I worry about where to store them all! I'm having enough issues with disc space as it is...

...and if you do serious editing, you will need some more RAM and processing power. My laptop already struggles when I manually stitch and edit 10 image pano's.

Now how does it fare in comparison to the D7000,D90 or D300s.

With so many strong competitors out there where does the D300 fit, is it simply replaced by one of the above or do we take into consideration the fact its semi-pro build and work its worth from there ?

Does the D300 compliment the D90, or has the D90 left it behind as a partner to the D300s ?

Does a magnesium build, 51 point focus and weather sealing lift it above the D90 or seperate it from the D7000.
The D300 is it diminished by the now discontinued D300S ?

Talking about the D300s what about the D400, will it be another nail in its coffin ?

Thats why I ask about value, with so many excellent options ( and thats just the Nikon options ) does it retain value ?

Now how does it fare in comparison to the D7000,D90 or D300s.

You have to remember that the Dxxx series camera is a higher-end series than the D7000 or the D90. It has a more advanced AF system, better controls, it's probably better built too. Weather or not it's older, in those areas it still outclasses the D90 and D7000.

IQ improves with each new camera, but the differences in number look a lot bigger than they are in real life. If I shot two sets with the D300 and D7000 respectively, I can guarantee you you will not be able to tell them apart.
