D600 just not up to scratch

LOL - I feel sorry for anyone telling an MTN customer to move to Vodacom. I've recently acquired a Sony Ericsson S700i (the sexiest phone on the market!) it might not have EDGE or 3G...but it's a very unusual phone and not every Tom, **** and Harry has one. Vodascum couldn't even BEGIN to help me and I got the cold shoulder the minute I spoke about the phone.

Luckily MTN in Morningside helped me out on my first call to them.

Hear my words people: All networks have their issues. But Vodacom is NOT all it's cracked up to be. It's riding on marketing campaigns and it's got a false sense of superior service because of that.

Guys, thanks for the all the responses, and a special thanks to Gladiator for the help.

After re-reading my initial post, I feel that I may have been a little hard on the D600, and that most of my frustration was due to the fact that I have been in "Sony Ericsson mode" for over 2 years now.

It's been four days, and I've warmed up a bit to the D600. As I stated in a previous post, BT is now working, and as Gladiator pointed out, it's a LOT faster than the USB. In fact, transferring files to the phone is faster than it was with the K750i. The fact that special BT drivers were required though, is quite a pain in the a$$, especially when there is no help on the subject from Samsung.

Sending SMSes has become a little easier since I discovered that using the OK centre button reduces the number of keypresses required. D'oh. It's still a few too many IMHO though. And something that I found particularly annoying is the fact that the T9 predictive text doesn't auto-capitalize the first letter after a full-stop. I'm one of those TXTers that insists on fully punctuating their SMSes, and it's rather a schlep. Again, I think I just need to get used to the Samsung way, and lose the SE mindset that I am in.

Gladiator, the D600 doesn't have a "Special Tone" option. I cannot BELIEVE this simple oversight on Samsung's part. For a phone aimed at the "business user", the included message alerts are a joke, as are the ringtones. Fortunately, the ringtone is customizable.

I think the number ONE thing that saved this phone from being returned is the screen. Ah, that screen.... Seriously, it's like nothing I have seen on a mobile phone, and it is simply fantastic. I had a high quality trailer for Transporter 2 which, using Nero Recode, I converted into a 500kbps .mp4 file. When played back on the D600, jaws drop. It's great. Bear in mind, the optimum bitrate for videos on the K750i is more in the region of 265kbps, so I'm thinking that the D600 might actually have more power, at least for video playback.

And it really is just frikken sexy. It has to be the best looking phone on the market now, and the sliding action is actually quite nice during practical use.

So to sum up, I still think the K750i is a better phone, but the D600 has earned it's place for me. If Samsung could offer better user-customization within the software (themes, tones etc), and put some more thought into the PC integration, they would have a REAL winner. Until then, Sony Ericsson reigns supreme.

oi stnick

okay

more fixes :)

okay the special tone issue. when u goto phone profiles and set the message alert tone. ull c special tones, if u just select it with the centre button, then it will select the default special tone. press the top left button while over the special tone and a small menu will appear, click edit and u can change the tone to a mmf, read my past post on making customizable mmf's

theres tons of other shortcuts and little tricks, maybe i should write a manual :)

Gladiator, unfortunately, the D600 is not the same as your Z500, in that it does not have the "Special Tone" option. There is no way of changing your message alert to anything other than the 10 defaults provided.

D600 not THAT bad

Hi..
1.) To use the D600 as mass storage device (drive I:) you have to have an extra memory card. (thats why windows asks about formatting in ur case).
2.) On my WinXP PC at home, old-ish machine I had the same problem with using the USB. Problem is I have USB 1 at home. On my laptop (W2K) and USB 2 everything works 100%.
3.) The SLOW transfer of files to the phone also comes rite when you use it as mass storage device (I know, I know, you need the memory card).
4.) Impressive feature : Using the phone as a GPRS modem, it is EDGE enabled and can use multiple slots. It is a class 10 GPRS device. I get download speeds of 7-10KBps. Which is not bad if your next best option is dialup.
5.) WAP works well, the camera is best in class, the STEREO MP3 player kicks ass, the output to TV for presentations is excellent, the document reader is a lifesaver.
6.) Remember it is a "business" phone as well.
Well played Samsung

Thanks for the response, I've been waiting for some feedback like this...

1.) Yeah, thanks, I eventually figured that out. :(
2.) My dialup problems via USB were my own fault, as I was incorrectly specifying the APN, instead of letting it do that for me with "*99#"
3.) I generally use Bluetooth nowadays to transfer files, which is pretty swift.
4.) The D600 is not EDGE enabled. The D600E is Edge enabled. I believe these are not yet available. I use my phone extensively for GPRS connectivity, and while yes it is good, it is no better than my old T610 for example.
5.) The camera is certainly not the best in it's class. That honour belongs to the K750i with it's autofocus feature. I've had both, and the K750i trumps the D600 in picture quality. That said, they both take nice shots on the whole. The document viewer is nice, but I have found it to be PAINFULLY slow, especially Powerpoint presentations with embedded images. The MP3 player is nice, but I'd like to see the ability for multitasking, so that you can still use the phone for other things (ie. SMS) while listening to music.
6.) Being punted as a "business" phone, you'd think that Samsung would have included at least one "ring ring" tone, rather than a bunch of nursery rhymes. Ditto for the message alerts.

Again, I really don't want to knock this phone TOO much, because I have honestly warmed up to it. But there's just SO many things that Samsung could have done to improve this phone, I just don't understand what they were thinking...

D600..

Hi. Sorry my mistake, D600 is not edge enabled. But it is class 10, meaning I get 4 slots download. I thought I was getting EDGE, but it is just multiple GPRS streams. I have never had a K750i, so I cannot argue.
We obviously differ about a few things, lets agree to disagree..

Yeah, fair enough, I realize some people have different tastes.

But, how's this for an annoyance with the D600 which I discovered yesterday... I received an SMS from a friend of mine in the UK. She recently moved there, and I have her in my phonebook already.

It is impossible to take that number from the SMS, and add it to the existing contact in the phonebook. The ONLY way to do this is to scribble it down with a pen and paper, and then manually edit the entry. OR, using a complex set of keystrokes, create a NEW phonebook entry for that contact.

Wrong...
Go to cut address, then paste, then save.;)

I knew someone would say that... However, your solution will create me a NEW contact... I cannot add to an EXISTING contact.

Hold on there skippy... Let's not jump to conclusions... The D600 isn't without it's problems, but it's better than a 6680. Well, that's my opinion... As we've agreed in this thread, people's tastes differ.

Ooh, this is becoming a flame war - head off to www.mobile-review.com/forum2 if you want to experience a true mobile-phone flamewar.

I, for one, am extremely happy with my 6680 and Series60 phones in general. :) Synchronization with my PC is a breeze, bluetooth/cable connection is a breeze, 3G is super fast, and any phone that can play MP3s, .AVI videos (SmartVideo), read e-books, multitask and play Monkey Island (via SCUMM) is a great phone. :)

EDIT: To be fair, the phone is much bigger than the D500/D600, the camera is worse, it becomes slow after long usage and software may be buggy. But I still love it. :)

monkey island? scumm??? how is this done, elaborate!!!!

Hehe, knew I'd get somebody's attention... :D

It works good, as well. Seems every now and again it restarts my 6680, but I never loose data/save-games/connection etc. It takes 20 seconds for this to happen, and I figure since I was planning on playing MI, I didn't plan on using my phone during that time... :)

Also, beware that the text is a bit cramped, so you'll need to read carefully. But on the bright side, MANY of the old SCUMM games work perfectly.

Edited for grammer...

SE is still the best when it comes to custumisation and the UI is the most intiutive I've come across...Best phone maker overal=SE...the worst is LG, try the M4410...that must be the worst phone that ever landed in my palms.

Get an i-mate, mate.. easiest thing ever and you'll be dead happy.. the K750 u've been using is a great phone but the i-mate has mch more functionality. I had a few SE's before (T610, K700, K750, S700, P800) and thought they were all the best phone I've ever had - until I got the i-mate ;). The functionality of the pocket pc phones are awesome and way surpass a regular cellular phone.

Well I could'nt agree with you more ... I'm a die hard Nokia fan and since getting my 7710, communication has been an absolute bliss ... Pocket PC/ PDA like phones are the definite way to go ... if it doesn't have a stylus then stay away from it ...:D ... hehehe ... kidding ...

People are fooled to buy crap devices just because of simple nonsensical feature like a lousy 2 Megapixel camera of wireless printing/ TV out put ... why on earth would one want to look at pictures on a TV? Can it print documents? Or can it edit documents at all? ... Well I don't mean to brag .. but with my phone I can open/edit/create MS Word/ MS Excel and view MS Powerpoint and PDF documents, as well as create and open Zip archives, setup mail via SMTP/POP3, browse the web normally, internet banking,VPN, I've literally got a mobile office in my pocket , I've got 1GB memory card in it so you know I don't need to buy an iPod .... now i'snt that what ICT is all about? I honestly laugh at people who buy phones for marketing gimmicks like cameras, tv output, cause a mere month later you are completely bored with you handset .... so don't go for looks go for brains, I've got the weirdest looking phone on the market .. but it's power-packed with all I need.

My advice is go for Pocket PC's , PDA or PDA like smartphones and stop buying wind-up toys, made for kids.

Well ... I would argue and say the Series_90 is definitely better than the UIQ ... well I don't know abou SE making the best phones .... that's really debatable ...

I was refering to the SonyEricsson's User Interface which is way better than other phones...Most users still prefer the Series 60 OS...I'm not going to argue about UIQ because I've never used it.
