For around R15k, what would you go for?

D90 with 18-200mm vrii
or
D7000 with 18-105mm vr

If you're going to spend that amount, then the D7000. D90 makes sense for people who want the twin VR kit.

I guess you made up your mind by now, with all the votes received?

I just love the 18-200mm lens, just for its versatility, and I want the 200mm reach without changing lenses the whole time. Problem is, it's bloo%^y expensive.

Also the D7000 disappoints in burst with its small buffer. And ultimately, if your not too much concerned with video, I don't think the D7000 will outperform the D90 that's worth the extra R5k

Without a doubt D7000, far newer technology.

But for photo's only and budget, then D90 will do it just fine.

D90 is still a damn good camera, for the money now that it had many price drops.

I must agree... the D90 is an excellent camera. I use one too. However, I do lust after the D7000, every time I see one or feel one.

I've had my D7000 for two months now. It's a terrific camera. As mentioned, the burst buffer is smaller than you'd want for a 6fps camera, but it isn't outperformed by the D90 in this respect. If you're looking to shoot action with a large buffer and fast frame rate, you probably wouldn't be looking at a D90 or D7000 anwyay.

The autofocus is marvellous. And the image quality is great. Low-light performance is another step up for APC cameras.

Having said all that though, there's nothing wrong with the D90. It's a fantastic camera, and depending on your needs, you could probably get decent use out of it and the extra R5k you save can go to better lenses/lighting.

I've been using (and making money from) a D70s for the past 5 years (and that is only 6mp). The D7000 is great, and it's worth the money, but you don't need the latest and greatest to take the best photos...

I should clarify that I meant you can get the D90 twin VR kit for R10,000, and possibly even less now which makes it a good deal.

D90 is end of life anyways isn't it?
It's close to the end I think, but is not yet discontinued. It appears Nikon have chosen to drop the D5000 instead and move the D90 into it's price slot for the moment.

Saving money up front on the body always helps with future lens purchases that WILL ALWAYS HAPPEN (and the D90 is still a great body, so it's not as if you're skimping).

The 18-200 VR II is a better lens than the combination of the 18-55/55-200 kit in my opinion, but probably not significantly better image quality to justify the extra R5000 for it, and also you're not getting any extra use/flexibility: your range will still be 18-200 whether you go kit/single lens, and the speed is the same (f3.5-f5.6). Changing lenses is usually not much of a pain - you get pretty quick at it after lots of practice.
If you went for the two kit lenses, and used the R5k you saved to pick up either a 35mm f1.8 prime, or Sigma 10-20, you'd have a much more versatile kit.

So if you're happy to go with the D90, that kit combo is probably the way to go.

From what I've read on the web, they've stopped manufacture of the D90, and it will be officially discontinued once remaining warehouse stockpiles are distributed (they don't announce discontinuation when they cease manufacture because it hurts sales of the unsold bodies). But that's actually good news, because it means there will be deals galore until all the D90's are sold out.
