A DA councillor was electrocuted while erecting posters for the by-elections in the Mpofana municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, the party said on Friday.

"The Democratic Alliance is devastated by the tragic and needless death of one of its most beloved public representatives, councillor Ken Denysschen," Member of the Provincial Legislature Sizwe Mchunu said in a statement.

"The heartfelt condolences and empathy of the DA... go out to councillor Denysschen's close family, his two sons and daughter, who we will visit today. May God be with you and comfort you in this very difficult time."

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon ahead of the by-elections on November 26.

The Mpofana municipality falls under the Umgeni constituency.

Denysschen served as a councillor in the municipality since 2011.

"He was a very rare person indeed, someone who had a great love of life and infected everyone he met with his boundless enthusiasm and bright hope for the future," said Mchunu.

"He was a virtual icon in the north-Midlands area, being utterly dedicated to the community and getting to know scores of residents through his unrelenting service in the Mpofana Ratepayers and Residents Association."

Pietermaritzburg - A DA councillor was electrocuted while erecting posters for the by-elections in the Mpofana municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, the party said on Friday.

"The Democratic Alliance is devastated by the tragic and needless death of one of its most beloved public representatives, councillor Ken Denysschen," Member of the Provincial Legislature Sizwe Mchunu said.

"The heartfelt condolences and empathy of the DA... go out to councillor Denysschen's close family, his two sons and daughter, who we will visit today. May God be with you and comfort you in this very difficult time."

By-elections

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon ahead of the by-elections on 26 November.

Outspoken critic

The Witness reported on Friday that Denysschen was an outspoken critic of the dysfunctional Mpofana municipality, and had been vocal about the collapsing infrastructure in the town.

According to the report, the council was dissolved and placed under administration by Co-operative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube after being affected by financial problems, community protests and labour unrest, including a disruption of the N3 highway.

The incident happened at about 17:00 on Thursday. A number of DA members were on the scene during the evening as they waited for a mortuary van to arrive.

“Ken Denysschen fought a brave battle as the lone DA councillor in Mpofana, trying to root out corruption and improve service delivery. He was just beginning to achieve a measure of success when his cruel death cut short his work," MP and Mooi/Mpofana constituency leader Greg Krumbock told The Witness.

A DA councillor was electrocuted while putting up by-election posters on electric poles in the Giants Castle area, Mooi River late on Thursday.

Ken Denysschen’s lifeless body was found lying on the ground by a passer-by who alerted the police.

His son Shawn was not in a good space to talk on Thursday.

“I haven’t seen the electric wire that killed my father, but what I hear is that there’s a suspicion that it could have been a stray illegal connection which he must have put the ladder against,” he said.

There are no informal settlements in the area where the incident happened.

A councillor erecting his own posters instead to getting his minions to do it!

ANC take note.

RIP

Just follow the wire... it must go somewhere... and charge those people.

A metal ladder up against an electricity pole is not the wisest thing to do, Why do you think the Telkom vans use fibreglass.
