DA eyes Telkom stake

Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is to announce on Wednesday its intention to form a "people's consortium" to bid for a strategic stake in Telkom.
The stake becomes available when Thintana's lock-up agreement ends on November 22.
Democratic Alliance MPs Enyinna Nkem-Abonta, finance spokesperson Raenette Taljaard and communications spokesperson Dene Smuts are scheduled to make the announcement.
Other bidders mentioned in the media include a group which includes former communications department DG Andile Ngcaba, ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama and senior ANC Women's League member Gloria Serobe.
The strategic stake amounts to 15.1% of the utility's shares in issue.
Thintana comprises US-based SBC Communications and Telekom Malaysia.
The agreement with Thintana - which brought 30% of Telkom in 1997 - gives the government first option to buy back the shares.
