Cape Town - The "exorbitant" multi-million rand salaries paid to Eskom executives had not prevented the power crisis now facing South Africa, the Democratic Alliance said on Thursday.

It was therefore disconcerting to note Eskom's chief executive officer, together with the utility's executive directors, were the highest paid in the country.

"They earned approximately R73m last year, with the CEO earning approximately R13m for 2005. This amount is five times more than Transnet's CEO, (who earns) approximately R2.6m.

"Unfortunately, these exorbitant salaries did not ensure the necessary skills and expertise to prevent the energy crisis we currently face," he said.
