DA majority in Western Cape by-elections

The Democratic Alliance retained three of four wards in the Western Cape by-elections, the Electoral Commission of SA's (IEC) regional office said on Thursday.

Wards in Gansbaai and Grabouw were retained by the DA, while a ward in Sandbaai was also retained uncontested after by-elections held on Wednesday, the commission's Carol Austin said.

The ANC retained a ward in Zwelihle, Hermanus, after facing the Economic Freedom Fighters for the first time in the region.

EFF candidate Samuel Nywebeni made little impact in Zwelihle ward 5, attracting only 11.9 percent of the votes.

The ward was won by the ANC's Sicelo Gxamesi with 88.1 percent of the vote.

The DA's Lydia Matomele won ward 11 (Grabouw) with 55 percent.

Ward 2 (Gansbaai) was won by Riana de Coning of the DA with 74.95 percent of the votes.

Ward 7, Sandbaai, was uncontested as the DA's David Botha was the only candidate nominated.

MUNICIPAL BY-ELECTIONS RESULTS IN

The African National Congress won 26 of 31 municipal wards in by-elections this week, according to results on the Electoral Commission of SA's (IEC) website.

The Democratic Alliance won in four wards and the Inkatha Freedom Party in one.

The by-elections took place in the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, and the Western Cape on Wednesday.

The 81 candidates represented 12 parties, while two candidates were independent. Five wards were uncontested.

In Inkwanca (Molteno) in the Eastern Cape, the ANC took three wards and the DA took one.

In the Free State in Maluti A Phofung (Qwa-Qwa) the ANC won the by-election in that ward.

The ANC won all four by-elections in wards in Mooi Mpofana (Mooiriver) KwaZulu-Natal.

Also in KwaZulu-Natal, the IFP won the by-election in a ward in Ulundi.

The ANC was victorious in all 13 by-elections in wards in Mogalakwena (Potgietersrus), Limpopo.

In Mpumalanga three by-elections were held and the ANC won in all three, namely in Mkhondo (Piet Retief), Govan Mbeki (Highveld Ridge), and Umjindi (Barberton).

There was one by-election in the Northern Cape in Kai !Garib (Keimoes) which the ANC won.

The DA won in three of the four by-elections in the Western Cape.

The DA won in Theewaterskloof (Caledon) and two wards contested in Overstrand (Greater Hermanus).

The ANC won the third ward contested in Overstrand (Greater Hermanus).

DA'S MOMENTUM GROWING: ZILLE

The results of municipal by-elections this week show that the Democratic Alliance's momentum is growing, party leader Helen Zille said on Thursday.

The DA had "staged a significant surge in growth" to win a rural Eastern Cape ward off the African National Congress, from 33 percent previously to 52 percent on Wednesday.

The ward comprised the towns of Molteno and Sterkstroom.

In the Western Cape, the party attained a 55 percent majority in Grabouw, the strongest in three years.

Zille said promising growth was shown in two wards in the KwaZulu-Natal municipality of Mooi Mpofana (Mooiriver).

The Inkatha Freedom Party was also celebrating on Thursday after winning a ward in Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal.

IFP national chair Blessed Gwala said the ward had previously been held by the National Freedom Party, and was also home to NFP leader Zanela kaMagwaza-Msibi.

"It certainly is a sweet victory considering all the resources and time that both the NFP and the ANC invested," Gwala said.

The IFP alleged provincial MECs had used public funds to woo voters in Mooi Mpofana before the by-elections and demanded full disclosure of how much was spent on certain events.

ANC THANKS MOOI MPOFANA VOTERS

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal thanked the residents of Mooi Mpofana (Mooiriver) municipality on Thursday for helping it secure all four wards in by-elections there this week.

The African National Congress secured over 7000 votes compared to the combined 2000 votes of four other political parties, said provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala.

The municipality was dissolved on September 1.

"The ANC will use its victory to make sure that the Mooi River/Mpofana municipality returns back to its glory," Zikalala said.

"We want the municipality to ensure that services such as water, electricity, roads, and clinics are delivered to people."

You do realise it isn't important who won how many elections right? What is important is the change in voting i.e if one party wins a ward that was previously held by another party, or if one party gains support vs another losing support.
Retaining wards is expected. What matters is if there was a difference to last time

BY-ELECTIONS OUTCOME 'HUMBLES' ANC

The African National Congress is "humbled" at winning 26 of 31 wards in municipal by-elections held this week, it said on Thursday.

ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa said the victory re-affirmed a decision to select candidates residents approved of rather than disregard their preferences.

The party would not take this re-affirmation for granted.

"The ANC and its government under the stewardship of President [Jacob] Zuma will endeavour to improve local government performance to ensure that we continue improving the quality of life of our people and to make South Africa a better place."

DA and IFP have the biggest reason to be happy, as they took 1 ward each that other parties controlled previously. The rest of the wards were merely retained.
