Smuts says a once-off installation fee would presumably have to be enormous to cover capital and operational expenditure, and would stop broadband rollout: ”Icasa is surely not expecting Telkom to provide free broadband.

I've been puzzled why she would make the comment about Icasa expecting Telkom to provide free broadband. It's just dawned on me that she probably doesn't know there are 3 charges involved in ADSL. Telephone line rental, ADSL line rental and ISP charges. She probably doesn't know about the ISP charge.

We need to get the point out there that Telkom are charging the line rental to cover bandwidth, which is then charged again by the ISP. No one objects to paying for the service nor are we asking for it to be free.

Telkom have two options, charge the ISP for the maintenance costs and let the ISP include it in the package price, or, eliminate the bandwidth charge and bill for a reasonable maintenance charge, such as ISDN.

Telkom seem to have forgotten the cost of bandwidth argument and are now spinning the cost of infrastructure one.

The journalists and politicians have not been following this story and will believe Telkoms latest spin. We need to provide them with the history.

I doubt that Telkom has bought of the DP, as well, so it can only be a lack of information at fault here.

Cheers
Chris

Right on the money. Caroper you should submit this to myblogs.co.za
It sums it up perfectly.

We are vitriolic d@mnit, we deserve to be after the way Telkom treats its customers.

The problem with these arguements is the good old "too many stoopid people . .".

Where's the one smart person in Telkom who can discuss this like an adult?

Perhaps a few DA Members have Telkom shares, I would not touch them out of principle (the Telkom shares that is...lol)

Telkom should never have been listed in the first place, now you have to put up with them (Telkom) bleating that they need to make money for the share holders and of course the share holders are eagerly lapping up all they can while they bask in the sun

The only problem is the harm it is doing to the country, it seems pointless trying to tell some people because they have made up their own little story to justify whatever they have done, or failed to do, for example the case of rolling out new phones and services to 2.8 Million people - One can only wonder how much money was lost on that venture, and then realise in sheer horror that over and above this Telkom still turned a profit (and a very large one at that) Which just goes to show how much extra we are paying for our services.

The other side of the coin is that Telkom has to pay back the huge amount of money they borrowed, but how many of us stare in sheer disbelieve as a monopoly puts two minute adverts on TV and full page ads in the newspapers. I certainly cannot fault those who mutter something about biting the hand that feeds, but I think it is getting to the point were a lot more people are saying enough is enough, and this issue cannot be swept under the carpet any longer.

The DA and any other political party for that matter would miss out on a golden opportunity to score points because the sorry state of communications is riddled with juicy worms, and most of the work has been done for them, all they have to do is read through the Hellkom site.

So we get back to the question, why is there been very little done about this?

Well the 3 tier price has always been intended to confuse. Remeber the TV ads for ADSL which conviently left out the ISP charge? Maybe someone should tell the honourable ignoramous that ICASA are proposing to abolish the ADSL extra rental, not the line rental nor the ISP charge (which mostly goes to Telkom in the end).

Then again, maybe Telkom made some nice campaign donations recently.
