DA says it can stop e-tolls in 2019

The Democratic Alliance says it will only be able to put a stop to e-tolls in 2019, having pledged to “ramp-up the fight against e-tolls” in the run up to the local elections.

I thought there were contracts in place that couldn't be broken?

That's not what they said when they were campaigning for Joburg.

Doesnt matter, nobody cares or pays for it anyway, hardly gonna swing votes imho

Haha.. This is as expected. Power for changing the eToll system is at national level. Locally they can only improve routes around it making it unneeded

Yeah, yeah, it was just election talk and strategy all along. Nothing else. It will become election talk and strategy once again come 2019.

I agree with comments above, there are agreements that cannot be broken. In terms of civil claims the government will be worse off. I suspect that the DA, should they ever come into rule in 2019, will just find other means of funding the work done and maintenance of the roads and close down the gantries. They will honour the agreements and then never renew it again with Kapsch.

why not in 2016? if is really their concern and trying to do some good?

Because it's not within local government's power to do anything about it and they get bitch slapped in parliament when they try do it there?

oh forgot that anc is the party who take care of tax payers money ...
