The DA has welcomed a move to allow Gauteng hospitals to buy medicines and other supplies directly from suppliers.

"It is a good idea to cut out middlemen where possible, and the medical depot in Gauteng has been very dysfunctional," Democratic Alliance MPL Jack Bloom said in a statement on Friday.

Around 20 hospitals would benefit from the agreement.

The Times reported that Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, Gauteng health MEC Hope Papo, and professors from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) signed the deal on Thursday.

The Wits professors run departments at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The agreement would also allow hospital CEOs to order hospital equipment costing less than R500,000 without approval from a central committee, The Times reported.

The national health department would monitor the delivery of equipment and drugs.

Bloom said the transition should be handled carefully. Central procurement of medicines for clinics was also needed.

"I hope that the new system works as I still get reports of medicine shortages from anxious patients," he said.

Cannot deliver checkbooks .. check.
Cannot deliver medicine .. check.
Everything's dysfunctional.

Begs the question, what can the ANC actually do besides be corrupt?
