Daan du Toit serves as South African Mission to the European Union.
Daan du Toit holds a Masters Degree in international public law and has extensive experience of the conduct of international relations, having started his career as a diplomat in the South African Foreign Serve. Over the past decade he has specialised in activities focused on international cooperation in science and technology. He has held various senior positions, first in the South African Department of Foreign Affairs an then in the newly established Department of Science and Technology, related to the promotion South Africa’s international scientific and technological cooperation.
In recent years some of his main responsibilities in the Department of Science and Technology included establishing and managing the European South African Science and Technology Advancement Programme - a dedicated platform to promote scientific and technological cooperation between South Africa and the European Union; representing South Africa in various multilateral forums dealing with science and technology policy, such as the OECD; coordinating South Africa’s participation in global research infrastructure programmes; as well as undertaking efforts to leverage foreign investment, including through partnership with multinational companies, in South Africa’s research and innovation capacities.
