DAB Stations

Have you been able to check the bitrate? Some of the DAB stations in the UK broadcast at 64kbps and lower, that's including some music stations

I have not been able to. The audio is good though, sounds comparable to cd quality so I assume it is at least 1411kbps but will need to confirm

A 48k AAC+ should give you the same quality as a 128k MP3. It is a lossy codec, but remember that FM is not CD quality neither, plus you have all the analogue noise when you do not have a perfect signal.

Just discovered there is also now a DAB trial running in Cape Town. So I am resurrecting this thread. Not sure if the JHB / PTA one is also still up and also not sure about coverage for the Cape Town one as there is little info available online about it. I am in Somerset-West and I pick up the following on my DAB tuner:

Service 1 - not sure what radio station
Service 2 - not sure what radio station
Service 3 - not broadcasting
Service 4 - not broadcasting
Radio 786
Service 6 - not broadcasting
Bush Radio
5FM
GoodHope FM
Smile 90.4
Radio2000
HeartFM
Lotus FM
KFM 94.5
VOC
RSG
SAFM
Magic 828
Metro FM
FineMusicRadio

I hope VW can enable DAB on my 2018 Polo when I take it in for service soon...

Still not sure about the bit rate used but it is using the AAC+ codec so not cd quality but sounds like an improvement over FM. DABs main objective is not to better the quality though, it is to use less spectrum and allow more channels. Some say FM quality is better than DAB? Don't know...

This is what we have in UK

The quality on most is on par or better than FM. What I don't like is that many of the stations transmit in mono. The great benefit of course is no crackling or interference.

Hi @Tector
I've been thinking about getting a DAB/DAB+ enabled radio for my dad because he likes to listen to BBC World Service. But from reading here it sounds like its not a station/channel he can broadcast. Is that assumption correct?

Hi there, not in SA no. The JHB trial is closed but is in trial in CPT but its only your local stations as listed up in the thread. You should be able to get it on the internet though through phone or PC

In JHB I don't think it's running at the moment. Did a scan for DAB radio stations on Sunday (from my car) and didn't pick up anything.

Amazon delivered my new internet/ DAB+ portable radio yesterday. Much to my surprise the scan picked up 21 DAB stations here in centurion. I thought the trial ended but on further investigation I found a note on SADBA website stating a new trial started on 1 june and will run for 8 months.

Any idea if Sentech is still transmitting DAB? Seems a now toy arriving soon has the capability and I'm keen to give it a try
