So I have been using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 to power my Yamaha monitors for a couple of years, but it has been a bit limiting. I would like something with Optical audio in (to connect the TV) and also to be able to play something via Bluetooth (eg phone), and when the PC is off.
After years of use, here are my thoughs on using the 2i4:
Pros:
- Runs cold (usb2 power only)
- Sounds good
Cons:
- A bit too big
- Static sounds when PC reboots, or sometimes when random apps open or USB is unstable.
- Loss in quality through volume knob, (it's too analog for my liking), occasional crackling, distortion, and it fades balence out to right channel when lowered in the first 90deg.
- Headphone Jack over-sensitive for my Ultimate In-Ear monitors, and picks up too much noise and interferrance.
- No Optical input, no bluetooth.
