Hi there!

Need some advice here. I've got a family MPV (Honda FR-V) that I use daily however the fuel consumption is killing me (between 10 -11 litres/100km) and it's getting a bit long in the tooth (190k km). I typically average around 100km a day with school runs, business meetings, etc. I occasionally do trips to PMB, Richards Bay, down the south coast abuot once a fortnight. Now I don't want to trade-in the FR-V because it's ideal for my family of 6 but I don't need such a big car during the week.

I live in a fairly hilly area tho not much traffic daily. The car must have good fuel economy (the main reason for this thread), should have a fair amount of power, preferably auto and I'm not looking to spend more than R120 - 140k. I don't mind a used car (all my cars were about 2yrs old when I bought them). I'm thinking along the lines of a hatchback with low fuel economy.

I've looked at the Polo 1.2Tdi, Fiesta diesel but I'm not sure about
1. how these cars would be second hand (maintenance, major repairs), and
2. how different are their actual vs claimed consumption figures

So let the suggestions fly in!

Thanks!

So now you are going to spend more money on a lease.
Work out your lease - l/100 in excess
Cheaper to keep the car for another 5 years.
Besides the Honda is probably good for another 100000km

Just to be clear, you need a new car and are looking for one with good fuel consumption? Or you actually don't need a new car, but are looking to get one anyway due to your current one having high fuel consumption?
Because with option 2, you'll be spending a few grand a month, to save a few hundred a month, which I would perhaps question.

Ok...excellent points! Thank you.

I've run some numbers and figured out that I can save around R1675 a month by using a car that consumes 7l/100km vs my consumption

Then I figured that I could afford about R90k to buy a car using this potential saving (excluding insurance, wear & tear, etc. for simplicity). So I got onto Autotrader to see what's out there for R90k. And I came up with this:

So now I guess I'm asking which of these cars do you think would met my requirements? I was actually quite surprised by what was in this price range.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

You seem to think you'll be driving 360km less per month if you get a second car? (3000km vs 640+2000km)
