Dakar 2019

What a boikie!!

Look how tired he is in that last shot...can barely walk. And I like those P'n'P Clothing socks he's wearing. Hope he finishes!

Also doubt if Gillette would sponsor him....too masculine.

Nah, he didn't make it. Retired on Stage 8. Sucks because he was riding in the toughest category.

Toby Price is, as his team call him, an animal. Guy wins the Dakar on a bike a month after wrist surgery.

Other bike trivia;

Spain's Laia Sanz finished 11th overall and wins the women's category. This was her 9th Dakar and she's finished every single one.

Botswana's Kalahari Ferrari, Ross Branch, finished 12th overall in his first Dakar.

Local boy Kenneth Gilbert, another rookie, finished 19th overall.

Russia's Anastasiya Nifontova becomes the first woman to finish the race in the Original category, placing 8th. These are riders that compete without a team. They race, service and maintain their bikes all on their own.

On to the cars;

As I am sure we are all aware, Nasser Al-Attiyah claimed victory in his locally-built Toyota Hilux. Big achievement for us. Giniel de Villiers slipped back to 9th overall as he shadowed Al-Attiyah during the final stage. Al-Attiyah took it easy on the final stage and Giniel had to ride shotgun should Al-Attiyah have required assistance or car parts. Giniel maintains his 100% record of finishing every Dakar he has entered (16 and counting) and he's only finished one of them outside the top-10.

I must say, I was worried that the Dakar would lose its appeal being reduced to one country but Peru really delivered. Lots of dunes, lots of sand, it looked incredibly tough for the competitors and provided a spectacular backdrop.

Some of the emotions as they finish. Can only imagine the mental and physical strain of this race.
